feeding response/handling

wbcrows Oct 15, 2009 03:00 PM

I have heard and read numerous reports of brooksi feeding response, mine are all 08 or 09 animals so they don't have a great deal of size yet but I haven't seen this" feeding response" as of yet. Is there a correlation between feeding response and the amount of time a snake is handled?

My .1 hypo floridian attacks her mouse(f/t) in the feeding tub but is a sweetheart whenever I go to take her out of the tank.

They get this feeding response after they get bigger. Adults come zooming across the room to chase you down for food.

Epicurus is eating every day almost at this point; and he does zoom to the opening as soon as it's ready. I think he's slowing down though--the mouse actually hit the floor last night.

i want an edit feature--
He's not so much attacking me for food--I'm just not handling him right now cause I want him to be relaxed and stuffing himself But when I open the cage he comes ready to eat and he has attacked--

the hemostats
himself
the cage wall
my finger
He's calmer shortly after he eats. Right now it's 1-2 pinks every day or so.

Ok so what advice does anyone have to not get attacked whenever dealing with the feeding response? I make sure not to feed in their tanks...

With these guys? I just let them bite me and ignore it...it's not exactly painful. Eventually they realize you're not food and let go.
With the retics, I just wait for them to realize no food's forthcoming...

Be very alert and ready to respond at any given time..LOL!

Mine slap their tales violently in uncontrolable excitement before they launch out of the tub to chase me down too, sort of like a horse gets all upity just before he bolts out of the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby!

my hypo will jump out of his cage at feeding time,,,i had to grab him the other day while he was in feeding mode,,thankful i have a snake hook,,,
i used to feed mine in separate containers when i had a couple snakes,,but as i got more,,it was very time consuming,,so now i feed in the cage,,and not one bit of temperment change...they know when it is feeding time,,they smell the mice in the air...
and whether you keep 1 or dozens of snakes,,,you will usually get bit once,,,hopefully when they are young...lol
