Brumation Dates?

Jlassiter Oct 16, 2009 08:59 PM

When is everyone going to "Cool Down" their Mexicana?
And....When do you all warm them back up?

Just wanted to compare dates....

I have used Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day for years with success.....

Hi John,

I've always used that same Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day; this year will be no different. Half my thayeri adults are off feed voluntarily already, as of a week ago. The western hognose quit eating a while back. I'll feed the ones that will eat tomorrow and next weekend, then that's it until March.

I kinda like using Holidays as my milestones. My last day of feeding has always been Halloween....lol
That may be about 3 or 4 more meals for my adults.....

Then it's lights out and the big cool down till Valentine's Day....I will start feeding mine before the end of February (1 week of warm up)....ESPECIALLY the females......
Thanks for sharing....

Looks like we have pretty much the same schedule. I'll start feeding again last week in Feb, after a week of warm up.

3-4 feedings left?! How often do you normally feed? All mine get fed just once a week but I load them up. I try to give the big adults 3 big mice. Smaller guys get 1-2.

Do you know yet who's getting paired with whom come spring? Maybe that's a good subject for another thread...

I feed every 3 days or so.
I try to feed when the snake is hungry....Their schedule not mine....
I used to never get such a strong feeding response from my Mexicana until I started keeping them in my Applegate enclosures....So many options/choices...hot side is 90F and room temp is 72F.....Sub floor Moist hide and dry hide...Timed lighting and heating.....They seem to have a faster metabolism and feed like crazy.....LOL

As for who's breeding who....I got it all figured out already.....
I hope to see some mexicana hatch over here again....it's been a long time since that's happened.....I can't wait....

Hi John,
I'm going to be radical this year, and let the temperature in my snakeroom fall into the 60's on its own, and keep the heat tape on them. Then I will put them together in late Feb-March and see what happens. This might not be cold enough for them. Anybody want to jump in with advice, I'm all ears, so to speak.

I wish I could do that....Down here in South Texas the temps seldom drop below 60F in the winter so I have to artificially drop the temps with an air conditioner dedicated for brumation....
And it may be benificial to keep a "hot spot" during the winter if you want to feed some...I know many Getula keepers that do this with great success....Another radical idea is to pair them up through brumation as not to miss a window of opportunity.....I would only do this with a pair you trust and equal in size as not to lose a snake...
