Burrowing, Temps, and Hibernation

treyevan Oct 17, 2009 12:51 PM

Hello all,

I recently purchased a new Colombian and I have had her now for about a month. She is around three or four months old (20 or so inches) and I have been monitoring the set-up in her tank. Her enclosure is a custom-made screen top tank and I am using an overhead ceramic heater as her heating source (it seems I cannot find a reliable undertank heater that heats the enclosure adequately), with the top covered by a towel, and I have temps and humidity fully monitored.

My question is regarding her behavior and temperature. I have roommates who like to keep the house at around 74 degrees, meaning I have to use a higher wattage for my ceramic heater. The temps on the hot side are close to 90 degrees with the cool side averaging about 78; however, she is burrowing into her substrate somewhere in the middle, and I am wondering if this is a response to low temperatures as a behavorial response to go into hibernating (she has been eating fine though). Perhaps she just prefers burrowing to hide? Or should I re-evaluate my setup? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best,
Trey
