On Topic: Dark colors duw

TimS Oct 17, 2009 10:21 PM

Well earlier today i was holding "baby" and she was in full dark mode so i decided to snap a few pics and then add in some pics also of her light colors just to show the difference in the same thread. Only thing that really changes on her are her sides for the most part.

These are from earlier today, some with some without flash:

Then here are a few of her in her lighter moments. First pic was taken around 1pm but she was still showing off her light colors.
night pics were taken anywhere from1 week roughly to up to about a month back:

I would love to see others compairison shots of day color and night color

She looks good,

These two pics are of Savannah taken on the same day....

In the middle of the day...

And about 12 hours later in the evening....

That is very interesting, thanks for the pics. Anyone have any theories why they change color like this? Does the color-change happen at certain times of the day/week/year? Does it happen with only females, or both sexes?

Thanks for sharing,
Ed

For mine, those are day/night colors. I suspect it's for thermoregulation, dark in the day to absorb heat, lighter at night to limit heat loss on the lower side in contact with cooler ground.

Thanks, makes sense. So all your individual snakes (both male and female) show this color change on a daily basis? Now I'm curious to see if there are any color changes in Mendoza. I haven't really paid much attention, especially late at night when I'm sleeping. I would imagine with ARB's, if there even is a color change, it would be much more subtle due to the lack of orange/red coloration.

Thanks,
Ed

Yeah, they all do show the "white walls" at night, just some are much more obvious and some are barely noticeable

i agree with dave on the whole temp thing and mine also changes day/night. usualy i dont see the light color until about 1am atleast when she is out cruising the cage.

i got some i went looking through Saphira's pics and i dont have many night shots of her but i do have a few, she actually doesnt have much for night colors, unless she waits till much later to change but here are a few of her

day colors

and a couple night colors
you can see just a hint of white walls here

here is Torpaz who has a much more noticeable change
day colors here

and night colors

so there are my two, Torpaz shows much more of a change but than agaon im usually in bed by 10 lol so i dont know if Saphira just holds off till later to change i havent payed close enough attention. when i do see her in night colors it doesnt seem as though her "white walls" go as high either.

i will start paying more attention to it and try to stay awake long enough for a late night photo shoot for ya

thanks for posting the pics. i am assuming Saphira is alot younger then torpaz? i have personally noticed more of a color change in older animals than the younger ones.

saagbay Oct 19, 2009 07:35 PM

actually no my own fault.. they are both 07s i got Saphira as a yearling and over the first couple months i back her down to feedings every other week, which isnt a big deal but i was giving her small meals so she wasnt growing as fast as she should have been. i got it taken care of now and i am trying to catch her up to where she should be but trying not to over do it at the same time
