Attractive syspila Joe. Gotta like the spots, do you have locality w/ that animal?
Nice work on getting it to feed on it's own.

Dell, I got a pair that included this male from PeeBee (Paul) and Snakebit (Doug). I think they said Anderson County, KS. That is one COOL looking one you posted there.

PeeBee Oct 19, 2009 12:27 AM

Looks great!
Congrats!

Yeah Doug, I should have. Well, to make it short, I grabbed a live small skink by the end of the tail so it would release a piece of tail and used the fresh blood to scent just the head of a small f/t pink. I then placed the still moving tail into a deli cup along with the pink. I dropped in the red milk and he attacked the tail section and ate it. Being a small meal I figured he would be charged up and still hungry and I was right. He immediately went over and smelled the pinks head and attacked that and ate it as well. Worked like a charm. The skink should regenerate its tail and be ready for another trick in several weeks or so. Wish I had more of them to rotate with this little trick!

Very good Joe Joe!

I've used similar tricks with anoles too, and it was smart to do that when you had the snake worked-up in a feeding mode as well!

I did that after assist feeding a real problem hatchling a pink, then when I saw it started to munch it down on it's own, I immediately offered another one I had thawed with long forceps. The response was.....BAM!!,...yum-yum!..LOL!

Congrats on the success of that little number!

Hey Doug, the female shed today and I was able to get another piece of tail off of that skink. Did the bait and switch again and now she has eaten a pink. Worked like a charm again!!

Well, I wouldn't say that. I am sure there will be some babies next year that might want to nurse on that tubing!

snake_bit Oct 21, 2009 10:13 AM

Ill have to bring some f-tubes down to next years Tailgate Swap

btw the knob ate a unscented ft pink last night.

Yes sir!!! I am sure Phil would not mind one either. Doug, do you keep any of your babies up for the winter?

snake_bit Oct 21, 2009 02:27 PM

I will keep all the babys as well as the subadults warm for winter if they eat. Or maybe ill cool them for just a few weeks just to get them to eat

I've always loved that "hey bro, we couldn't wait any longer" photo. My wife even laughed at it. I do the same but most of my sub-adults want to act like adults and stopped eating this year. One day I will invest in on of those dorm fridges and get Patton to help me convert it to a little brumation chamber. That would enable me to make my own little "winter brumation" and get them going a little early.

snake_bit Oct 21, 2009 10:06 PM

im using a unheated underground room under my porch . Its between 50 and 60 this time of year.I will see how cold it gets this winter.

Nice Joe. Good work. I've got a handful of temporalis now that are all eating pink heads except for one. One even took a full pink the other night. They are sure worth the effort, huh?

Gotta love that feeling when all that hard work pays off. Post some pics when you get a chance. Love looking at those temps.
