ugh lesson learned AGAIN

Well awhile back i had a trade gone horribly wrong with a bigger name reptile person. well to now add to that the snake i got in return was supposed to be a female well guess what???? yup its a male. I dont know why i never checked it, I always always double and even triple resexed snakes. I have gotten miss sexed snakes before and made sure of to always recheck.
I guess with the frustration of the trade gone bad it just slipped my mind.
My tip of the day is if you know how to sex or you know some1 who does, anytime you get a new snake double check the sex. probe it, pop it, palpate it, or all the above or any other way yo may have and like NIKE says JUST DO IT lol.

anywhos im done with my rant and feel a tiny itty bit better now.

Sorry to hear that. All you can do is move forward.

I know for a fact at least one of my 2005 babies were incorrectly sexed by employees being paid to sex the lot at one of the largest herp stores in California. It happens. Now "Rose" goes by "Rosco". Since then I've learned to sex them myself, does that mean 100% accuracy - probably not!!

There are inhereent problems with every sexing method....

Probing - not enough pressure and you can get a false female, too much presssure and you can damage sex organs even to the point of false Male.

Popping - not enough pressure and again false female. Don't know for sure but I believe too much pressure and again can damage organs. Not likely that I know of to get a false male.

Palpation - Not enough pressure or non-sensitive finger tips and false female again. I can see where to much pressure could damage but not likely as palpation uses so little actual pressure.

In all three cases IMO it's much more likely to think a male is a female than the other way around. Unfortunate as we all would rather have an extra female than an extra male.

When I have not been bit enough recently, I resex the female babies to see if I missed any males.

great post dave and i totally agree and understand ad this one is TOTALLY my own fault for not double checking right away at the "reptile shop"

I think if i ever get a male that is sold as a female some1 really needs to rethink their sexing methods lol. thats some serious hurt on the snake right there.

I had a argentine x columbian i bought awhile back and was sold as a female and well i didnt have any real plans for her just a kind of dinking around project/pet and well i sexed that awhile after i got it since i was taught the palpating method and sure enough its a boy. well it was sold to my friend dirt cheap cause she really like her/him and its name went from delilah to OH LORD lol needless to say the snake is one happy little critter and looking very very nice and happy being a pet, tho holy cow he eats like a moose

I think you may have that backwards....

IMO getting a female that was sold as a male would be worse.....

Probed - over inserted probe, likely going through the female sexual organ possibly damaging it to the point of sterility.

Popped - What exactly did they get to pop out??? again, maybe now sterile?

Palpated - What did they "feel" maybe a vertebrae?

And of course the best case would be a simple mismark on a card/list/?? ie sexed out as female and wrote male.

IMHO it's way more likely to get a "female" that is actually a male than the other way around.

Tim,
...I have gotten missexed snakes from some of the biggest names in the business. Even just recently an adult "female" Brazilian Rainbow Boa I bought from another breeder at the Daytona Expo in august turned out to be a male. I have gotten to where I just expect some to be sexed wrong and do not let it bother me. As a matter of fact all five female Argentinian Rainbow Boas that have produced babies for me over the years were sold to me as males. When I am sexing baby snakes any that probe as females get reprobed again later just to be sure. I think I am probably close to 100% accurate with snakes that I sex and identify as males. The percentage with females is probably a little less. Anyone who says that they can sex snakes with 100% accuracy is clueless.

great post jeff. Tho I can sex with 100% success, just gotta wait till one pair is alone and has babies together lol.

I am learning to accept it more and trying to make sure i re sex everything atleast once if not twice when i get it.
This time just bit the big one big because it was a part two on my trade gone wrong adventure with him. like the salt in the wound so to say lol.

ok Gnight everyone,

ps. keep a eye out for zoo pics tomorrow night
