Question - Hypo and Pastels

johnholts Oct 20, 2009 02:43 PM

Does breeding an orange ghost to a pastel have any effect on even slightly cleaning up the pastels that hatch from that breeding? I know some people have said they don’t consider hypo as a “cleaner” gene like fire, vanilla, etc., just curious if anyone’s had a bit brighter an/or cleaner pastels hatch as a result from the pairing.

Thanks for the responses,
John

Are you talking about Orange Ghost Pastel or Het Orange Ghost Pastel ?

The Ghost/hypo gene is a recessive gene.

The Pastel Hypo are glowing more than the lone pastel or the lone hypo ones.

If you are asking if the ghost gene alone (1 allele) in the pastel as a pastel het ghost, make the pastel cleaner. I couldn't say.

But I heard that some breedres are able to nearly pickup the het ghost from a possible clutch, cause they were lighter or kinda glowing. Or when the possible are morph.

Like a caramel that is het ghost, when you compare it to a normal caramel, you could tell which one is a het ghost and which one isn't.

I am curious about this too, but as the OP said, I am more interested in and Orange Ghost/Hypo Pastel. To me, the "Orange Ghost" morph is not truly Hypo but more Xanthic like a Pastel is. So the two together should be pretty interesting.

Any pictures?

If you google Pastel Orange Ghost then click "images" at the top, there are several pictures. I'm quite fond of this combo. I have an 09 female and am going to try to get a male next year so that I can shoot for Super Pastel Orange Ghosts when the female is up to size.

A lot of people refer to them as POG, you can search for them. or SPOG for the super pastel orange ghost.

On Corey Woods website, there is a bit of information on it.

Here is even a post he made about Pastel Orange Ghost Lesser (POGL)

They sure can be refered to as POG and SPOG but are in reality hypo pastel and hypo super pastel.

A ghost is the double homo recessive Axanthic Hypo!

watever Oct 22, 2009 01:09 PM

Well, the ghost is the name giving to the hypo in ball python. I know the ghost have been used as axanthic hypo in corn etc... but we are talking about balls here lol !

Seriously I don't care what you call them.

But also, how many person are saying that Orange Ghost are not hypo !? They are different than the other line of ghost, they don't only produce less black but they glow :D

and the POGL must be neon glow damn it !

Whatever! you just keep calling them ghosts, wether they are orange, yellow, butterscotch ou green, they all have some degree of reduced melanin, hence, hypomelanistic, i.e. hypo

Its all good, nomeclanture in our hobby is a real joke anyways, people call em whatever they want, no standard is ever respected!

I'll just try and respect what they truly are and call em hypos, fair enough...

I have browsing the web looking at images and finding not all the Ghosts/hypos really adhere to the term of hypo. Some resemble hypos while others really dont and just have a faint extra color.
