THE AUSTRALIAN (Sydney) 16 September 03 Croc shot as girl tells of her ordeal (Paul Dyer)
A 10-year-old girl told last night how a saltwater crocodile swam alongside her before it attacked.
A shy but smiling Tereasa Richardson-Nagawalli was recovering in Royal Darwin Hospital, suffering a 20cm gash and cuts to her right thigh.
She said there was a big swirl of water before the crocodile attacked.
"I saw something coming underneath my legs," she said.
"And I sort of felt this rough thing on my leg."
The attack happened on Saturday in a billabong near the Patonga Aboriginal community outstation, about 200km south-east of Darwin.
Tereasa's aunt, Elizabeth Ritchie, 33, said her niece and six other children had been swimming unsupervised just metres from the bank.
"The crocodile sort of surfaced right beside her," Ms Ritchie said.
"She met him face to face and she looked him in the eye - that is a pretty scary experience.
"Then it went under and bit her on the leg - then it quickly let her go."
Tereasa swam to the edge and ran 100m to her house before she was airlifted to Darwin.
Officer in charge of crocodiles in Kakadu Garry Lindner, said the 2.13m croc was shot and killed on Saturday night.
"There were others in there but for the size class we are sure that's the one responsible," he said. Ms Ritchie said the children had been warned not to swim in the billabong.
"We've seen crocodiles in there before," she said. "Some people have found a headless dog floating in the billabong."
She said rangers shot a 4m crocodile in the billabong last year. Tereasa, who was lucky to survive, vowed never to swim there again.
Ms Ritchie said Tereasa was a hero because her first instinct was to shout to the other kids not to jump in the water.
