OZ Press: Croc shot as girl tells of her ordeal

Sep 17, 2003 06:35 PM

THE AUSTRALIAN (Sydney) 16 September 03 Croc shot as girl tells of her ordeal (Paul Dyer)
A 10-year-old girl told last night how a saltwater crocodile swam alongside her before it attacked.
A shy but smiling Tereasa Richardson-Nagawalli was recovering in Royal Darwin Hospital, suffering a 20cm gash and cuts to her right thigh.
She said there was a big swirl of water before the crocodile attacked.
"I saw something coming underneath my legs," she said.
"And I sort of felt this rough thing on my leg."
The attack happened on Saturday in a billabong near the Patonga Aboriginal community outstation, about 200km south-east of Darwin.
Tereasa's aunt, Elizabeth Ritchie, 33, said her niece and six other children had been swimming unsupervised just metres from the bank.
"The crocodile sort of surfaced right beside her," Ms Ritchie said.
"She met him face to face and she looked him in the eye - that is a pretty scary experience.
"Then it went under and bit her on the leg - then it quickly let her go."
Tereasa swam to the edge and ran 100m to her house before she was airlifted to Darwin.
Officer in charge of crocodiles in Kakadu Garry Lindner, said the 2.13m croc was shot and killed on Saturday night.
"There were others in there but for the size class we are sure that's the one responsible," he said. Ms Ritchie said the children had been warned not to swim in the billabong.
"We've seen crocodiles in there before," she said. "Some people have found a headless dog floating in the billabong."
She said rangers shot a 4m crocodile in the billabong last year. Tereasa, who was lucky to survive, vowed never to swim there again.
Ms Ritchie said Tereasa was a hero because her first instinct was to shout to the other kids not to jump in the water.

This is what bothers me....

People go into an animal's natural habitat - KNOWING it's their habitat, then get attacked and then want the animal shot.

This is retarded.

If I jump in the bengal tiger exhibit at the zoo and get attacked - would it get shot? There's no difference. Animals are NOT suppose to see a human and think "hey, that's a human - not supposed to bite those..."

If you go hiking in a park that you know has bears and get attacked - then guess what... you deserved it.

I know posting this won't change anything - but it lets me vent

Is your first name Harvey, by any chance?

nope

I'm surprised you asked... my last email included my real name.

I'm terribly sorry, but I get a tremendous amount of emails daily, concerning all types of reptiles. Can you refresh me as to what the email was about? Forgive my limited memory please.

Hey Brian,

Last email was about coming by and seeing your facility at the same time as Chris and Adam. You said you'd rather we got to know eachother a little better first.

It's totally understandable - I mean, I am just some guy on the net really. I suppose you meant we'd get to know eachother through our posts (getting to know character maybe?).

Anyways, I'm patient, and before long - you'll probably notice I'm slowly building my private zoo

Not too many people have the love for animals or the resources or the drive to accomplish what they want. I have all

Talk soon,

Randi

Oh yes yes yes,.. I remember you very clearly now. Again, I apologize for forgetting. I hope you understand but I don't generally memorize screen names unless I get into deep discussion with that person at one time or another. What I meant was getting to know one another by any means. Simply because no one ever sees my facilities unless I know them exceedingly well. I have a great deal of very expensive snakes in addition to a good number of gators and to best protect them I keep their locations and existance as secret as is humanly possible. Posting in forums such as this is my "outlet" if you will that satisfies my urge to share my pets and experiences within the security of relative annonymity. But I do like it when I make friends and eventually have them over to see the reptiles and bar-b-que and so on. I am, after all, still a human with social urges.
