Vivarium set up

darkstalker669 Sep 17, 2003 06:35 PM

Alright, so now I've decided that a vivarium is a necessity for my henkeli. I have a good idea as to how to set up the false bottom, but i have a few other questions.

1) What kind of pump should I get if I plan to make my own waterfall (which I do)? I can get an Exo-Terra 250 fountain pump at my local pet store, but do you have any otrher suggestions?

2) Where can I get cork-bark flats?

3) What kind of plants do you recommend for a Uroplatus tank? I would like some that wont get too overgrown and such, but any suggestions would be great.

4) What other reptiles or amphibians can I keep in this vivarium? My goal i mid-70's to low 80's as far as temperature goes, and 80 humidity.

5) What kinda of rocks/gravel should i use under the false bottom?

6) Are there any plants or animals I absolutely should NOT have in the tank?

7) Is there any problem keeping more than one Uroplatus species in a tank?

8) What kind of moss do you suggest to mix in the substrate and to use throughout the tank?

9) What should I use for backing of the tank? I have found that Henkeli's dig cork-bark, but do you have any suggestions?

10) What kind of substrate should I use? I have seen mixes with Orchid bark and other such things including moss, but any other sugestions would be appreciated.

P.S. I have checked out many vivarium websites, but there isn't much about specifics for a vivarium housing a Henkeli. If there are any, I would appreciate your input. thanks so much!

You can get a lot of the supplies your going to want from blackjungle (www.blackjungle.com).

As far as housing other uroplatus with a henkeli, I wouldnt do it. Sikorae and phantasticus both would probably be made a meal by a full grown henkeli.

If you plan on using a waterfall, (I dont understand why you would) I would make it yourself, not one of the storebought ones.

Black jungle also sells expanded clay balls to use for the false bottom, or you could go with the eggcrate method.

Thats about all the advice I've got for now. Anymore questions Ill be happy to give my input.

why do you so detest the idea of a waterfall? it will help me to keep the humidity up, which i am having quite a bit of trouble with. also, any idea on other species tht i can keep with my henkeli? When I bought him, he was housed with a female lined leaf tail, and they did fine together, and in a very small tank. any ideas?

I dont detest the idea of a waterfall, just dont think it neccessary in a gecko set up. Your choice though.

Live plants and moist soil will usually be enough to raise the humidity, if your still having trouble try covering part of the top of the tank with plastic lining.

As far as keeping other species with the henkeli, the choice is yours in the end. I would stay away from the smaller species though.

i'm not exactly an expert on uros, but henkeli should be kept only with other henkeli. Anything smaller will get eaten.
