She wouldn't poop, more info

SpectreBCIs Oct 23, 2009 12:36 PM

So Nala, my 7 year old anery boa passed last night. I took her to the vet when she didn't seemed able to defecate a couple of days ago. The vet did a whole work up, x-rays, blood tests, enema, fecal tests, the whole nine yards, and sent me home with antibiotics. The blood test showed she was anemic and had high levels of calcium. He said that could mean cancer or she was ovulating.

The thing that concerned him the most was that there was a definite lack of muscle tone in the lower half of the body. I noticed it too when I was putting here in her tub to take her to the vet. Her lower half was really flaccid and her cloaca wasn't really staying closed, just leaking urates. She would right herself if placed on her back and she could move, it was just really atrophied and he thought she didn't have the muscle control to produce a bowel movement. He tested for parasites that have a neurological effect, but they were all negative.

There was some blood in the stool and the x-ray showed fecal matter in her digestive tract. It also showed some abnormal distention of what appeared to be the intestines. He is doing a necropsy now and will send the tissues to someone for a histology report. I will let you know what he finds out.

All these symptoms came on in the last month. She has always been a great eater then 1 month ago, she seemed disinterested in her food. I left it in the cage, and she still ate it, but didn't have the usual "grab it as soon as I open the lid" response. 2 weeks ago I fed her and she regurged the next day. I waited a week and tried to feed a 1/2 sized meal and she wouldn't take it. She has mainly been staying on her heating pad.

Again, I'll let you guys know what I find out, and thank you Joel for responding to my original thread.

Something that I don't remember being mentioned in your earlier thread was temperature. Is it possible that her hot spot wasn't warm enough? If she wasn't digesting her food properly and spent all of her time on the hot side, that would be the first thing I would check.
I'm sorry for your loss.

Warm side is about 92. She is in a rack with other boas on a thermostat. The other boas move around, and she had too before. Again in the past there didn't seem to be any problem eating or defecating. I hope to know more soon.

Dang Scott, that is terrible news, you did all that you could do.

Snakes just do not give us much warning before they actually show signs of being sick, I am truly sorry for the loss of that girl.

I know this will not make it any esier for you but I just lost a precious female that was due to have babies yesterday

After I opened her up to see if there were any babies I found a massive infection near her anal opening....she never showed any signs of sickness, Chin up Scott it happens to all of us.

Keep us posted as to what went wrong.

Here are some graphic pic's first is the unfertile ova

I know I don't post here a lot, but I am on the site almost everyday. I appreciate the words of encouragement. Again, I'll pass on the info from the necropsy and histology.

So the vet did a necropsy and found some necrosis in the digestive track that fecal matter was adhering to. Apparently that was why she couldn't defecate or come out with the enema. He also noticed an abscess in the liver that he has sent off for a histology report. Now the fecal test was clean of parasites, but he is saying that it still could be parasitic in nature. Any ideas? She was only 7 years old and only had 1 litter 2 years ago. Never had a problems with her before, nothing wrong with the litter!

I am very sorry for your loss!!

As far as a cause... a very wise person told me once.... "Sometimes they just die." not the easiest thing to hear or even totaly get your mind around, but very true. You can look for causes and second guess everything you did, but even if you find out the cause you probably could not have done a thing to help her or prevent what happened.

Again I am so very sorry for your loss... we have all been there or will be at some point.... unfortunately it is part of dealing with live animals.
