curling lips in BTS

desaix Sep 17, 2003 07:16 PM

Hi,
I've been reading this forum for a while now and finally have a question... I've had a blue tonngued skink for a couple years now and last year I noticed that his lips started curling up a little at the edges. I took him to the vet and she said that it wasn't part of him jaw bone, just his "lips" I guess. She gave me chlorohexidene to rub on it, and it went away... but now it's starting to come back. I guess my question is has this happened to anyone else? Could it be diet related? I've been feeding my skink a mixture of weight control dog food, fruits, veggies, shrimp and hard boiled egg whites all with vitamin powders (plus calcium). Does this sound ok? I guess got another blue tongued skink and especially want to make sure that this doesn't happen to her.
Thanks for any help,
Kate.

I don't know any specifics about it. I'd suggest you contact James Wilson (look for his many posts below) since he has a great deal of knowledge about BTS. I simply haven't experienced this problem myself, but I have heard about it.
Let us all know if you find out anything about it, as we are always interested in furthering our knowledge about keeping BTS.
Best of luck.

I read that curling lips in BTS is a first sign of not enough Ca.
I would pick up some rep-cal ph. free Ca and mix that in with his food.

I have been using Ca mixed in with his diet. Do you think maybe I'm not using enough? I've been putting in a pinch...
Also, I find that when his lip lifts up, I can remove some hardened pieces off his lip which I assume is because his lips don't shut together and some of his saliva leaks out and hardens on his lips. Do you think these hardened parts are making it worse?
Thanks,
Kate
