Finally got a Tri Color

SlytherLyn Oct 25, 2009 08:31 AM

I fell in love with Tri Colors years ago when I first saw a photo of one. I've seen some at shows, but they were all live or scented feeders. Found this pretty girl at The Reptile Guys pet store in Spencerport NY and was thrilled to find out she eats unscented f/t. She's going into shed now. I'll get new pics after she sheds. Haven't decided if I'll just keep her solo as a pet or if I will try to pick up a f/t eating male down the road. I've read getting the babies to feed is very hard.

There are a lot of misunderstandings out there about tricolors. Yes, the babies can be a little more difficult -but scarcely more so than some clutches of standard western hogs. Generally 50-75% of my hatchlings go directly onto pinks in one form or another (f/t, live, brained)-the rest need some kind of scenting (cricket frog, tuna, sometimes gecko). VERY few hatchlings show any interest in live pinks-even those which have already fed on unscented f/t!

Once hatchling Lystrophis start to feed-watch out! I honestly think they would stuff themselves every day if I let them!

The two most common mistakes I see with tricolors is that people tend to keep them either too warm or too dry-a humidity box is almost essential.

Finally, breeding these guys is much different from North American hogs!

Thanks! I'll set up a humidity box for her today.
