Fully Adjustable Rack System...

Jlassiter Oct 25, 2009 08:54 PM

I really don't like rack systems, but for my hatchlings it is a must....large enclosures are not good for such small snakes....
And...I wasn't going to buy one since I do know how to read a tape measure....LOL

Here's what I came up with....
11 levels right now and fully adjustable for any size tub per shelf....

All I need to do is add the heat cable when it come in.....
Total cost $200.00........

LOL....Anyone can do this without plans...call it a freebie....LOL
The shelves can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe's....they are pre made Rubbermaid melamine shelves (16" X 36"....you drill 4 holes in them and add the nuts and washers....Adjust & Tighten the nuts....

But I'm thinking of recording some dimensions when I build my next Applegate Style Enclosure along with some pictures throughout the build.....Then I may draw up some plans for them...

Not everyone has the room for these big enclosures though...Most people will always use a rack system because they hold a lot of snakes in a smaller space......We'll see....

Thanks Craig...

Nice John. So are your uprights just all-thread then? What a great and simple idea. Thanks for sharing.

Yep...5/8" Allthread, nuts & washers...The holes are drilled in the Melamine shelves 3.5" off the front & back edges and 1" off the left & right edges....The casters are mounted on the very corners of the bottom shelf.....
Pretty simple....Could be built in one day easily and will fit anything you want it to within the 16" limit of the shelf....

I built a smaller one just like it this weekend for the little guys (after seeing those pics you emailed me).

mine's 10x36 shelves on a 3/8" threaded rod. washers and bolts hold everything together and are fully adjustable.

I still need to add 2 more shelves to the bottom (home depot only had the 5 in stock) and wire up the flex watt across the back.

the containers are 7.5" wide x 11 deep x 2.25 high with a lid and pre-drilled holes on the sides. I chose the shallow shelves so the container stuck out the front about an inch in lieu of a handle. the shelves are spaced 2.5" apart (the shelves hold the lids on).

Nice job Josh.....It was easy too, eh?
BTW...What kind of containers are those....I like their clarity...

yes, super easy. took about an hour or so to slap it all together. worst part is threading those nuts for the length of the rod (i'm sure there's a good joke in there somewhere) lol

I love these containers; they are glass clear. both me and my dad have been using them for a while now and they work great. came from the container store (my second job).. they are the 'Low-Heeled Shoe Box'

I may pick some of those up....
With the width I'd only be able to have three per shelf, but with the 2.5" height I could squeeze more shelves into the rack....
I'll have to do the math to see if it works out better with those.....But...They are a little more expensive than the 99 cent shoe boxes I got.....LOL
I'm so cheap.....

Excellent idea! And if it met your needs, you could get real fancy and hang it from the ceiling and keep the floor clean and clear. Done properly within the confines of a closet might be pretty slick.

Hope you feel better....The flu gets worse and worse every year...don't know if it's because I'm getting older or if the strain is getting stronger....LOL
