Adult lineaticollis

Spankenstyne Oct 25, 2009 11:01 PM

The pair of P. lineaticollis we have here. The male, he's somewhere near 7'.

The female, she's in shed right now so I didn't want to have her out too much until she does shed. She apparently laid eggs this season so she's still a little thin. We've only had them here a few weeks but wow are they fun!

It's a bit deceiving how big she is from that above shot, she's actually somewhere just over 6' long

I'll try and get some better shots, but my wife is a bit intimidated by them still & didn't want to hang around for better pictures.

Those are really nice. Rabbit or rat eaters? Can you imagine coming across one that big in ther field>

Thanks guys.

These two are just rat eaters & quite tractable as far as temperament... So far..
I've only had them here a few weeks though but have had no issues reaching in bare-handed.

Very, very impressive. To me these don't look delicate at all. Ever had any regurge problems?

ginter Oct 26, 2009 09:07 AM

Actually I have never known this ssp to be difficult, sensitive, or touchy in any way. They will pound large and frequent meals w/o regurge issues.....

My founder pairs will consume large retired breeder rats readily no problem!

The only thing I would say is that they can be a little nippy at times....

If yours are as big as the ones pictured and I guess they would be if they are pounding jumbo rats...I bet that would be a little hurtin if it nailed ya.

They are huge... I am guessing that my biggest male and female are nearly 8ft long and have max body circumfrances of maybe 9 or 10 inches....

They tend to be fear biters so when they do connect it is generally a really fast nip as apposed to a "grab and chew". They are relativily predictable and it is easy to judge when and why they are going to get defensive so I rarely get taged... thankfully....

What an fantastic group of Pituophis.......
these are my 2008 hold backs (one is really almost completely rust colored lacking black pigment and the other is partially unrelated and has an unusual pattern in that no stripes or saddles merge along the centerline of the back leaving the snake with a cool ground color "stripe" almost for its entire length.....

That is huge. I had no idea of the true size these guys could attain.

Spankenstyne Oct 26, 2009 11:41 PM

I've been told they can go 9' but I'm a see it to believe it kinda guy... I don't doubt it as much now though.

Those '08's are gorgeous.

One more species for the wishlist.

Spankenstyne Oct 26, 2009 11:35 PM

Have only had these two a few weeks, but so far no regurges.

Nice to see pics of massive colubrids which offer comparison to people. Great post, awesome snakes!

Spankenstyne Oct 26, 2009 11:38 PM

Thanks. Yeah I also like to see some of the bigger ones with a person for a better idea of size.

RichH Oct 26, 2009 09:44 PM

Impressive. Reminds me of a few asian ratsnake types I kept years ago.
