anyone heard of florida putting hogs on

jayfischerherps Oct 26, 2009 07:17 PM

the venomous list soon. As long as we have bred hognose I have heard they are going to. Then last year I heard they are putting just the south americans ( tricolors and such)on only. At a show this weekend I heard through the grape vine they are putting all the hognose on. Anyone heard anything? There are a lot of hognose in Florida. This would be a real party poop per. I think they are comparable to Poison dart frogs if they are born in captivity and don't eat toads and you are not actually allergic to the animals saliva it is a harmless pet.
Anyone heard any thing?

Well I agree they shouldn't be on an illegal to own list.
I do disagree that you can't have a reaction to a CBB Hognose that has never ate toads. I've been bit by many species and I've never had a reaction like I have with my 100% het pink pastel Hog.

Cheers,
Chad

sorry too hear about that bad reaction. Even garter snakes have caused swelling and pain. I just hate to see a whole group of wonderful animals made illegal.
I've been bitten with no ill effect. If it is true they will be put on the venomous list, Florida keepers need to speak up.

hear anything about this? Hognose on the venomous list would not be a good idea. We need to speak up if this is true.

No pain what so ever. Well minus the actually bite. Only swelling that lasted around a day.

I agree they shouldn't be on a illegal list. I've been bit by False Water's, Mangroves, 100's of Garters, Barons Racers, etc.. with no affects. I get chewed on by a 16" Hognose, and my finger swells up.

Cheers,
Chad

Jay, You need to call your state representative immediately. If you wait until the law is passed, it is too late. Many times the state will hold public forums to discuss matters like this, and get the public input. You need to find out if there will be such discussions, or if your representative will be receptive to your concerns and vote against inclusion of hognose in the proposals. I hope to move to the Naples area in the near future, and would hate to have to get rid of my hoggies.

I have been bitten several times by hognose, usually because I was too slow when getting out of the way of a feeding response
while cleaning a cage. Even though the hoggie drew blood, there was no swelling. However, allowing one to chew on your finger will allow a minute amount of venom to enter the finger, and cause swelling.

Florida Fish and Wildlife was sweating vendors at Daytona this year that had Hognose.

Household cleaning products, steak knives, power tools - all far more deadly than a hognose, which hasn't killed anyone.

Yes, they are mildly venemous to a degree, so are ants and gartersnakes. But they don't do lasting damage to humans. How about you must be 18 to own one? Or else they come with a warning label.

I think ants should be outlawed.

I agree that they should not be banded but they can to lasting damage.
