bitting ?

jhm1987 Oct 27, 2009 07:18 PM

We have a 2yo female boa that has never been aggressive. However the past two-three weeks has been a different story. She whigs out when you pick her up and she has started bitting when in this frantic state. She's bit my b/f 4 different times and today she actually latched onto my arm and my b/f had to pull her off... boy am I glad she isn't bigger! Has anyone ever had this happen? This was VERY sudden. One day she was fine and then boom...different snake.

It sounds as if the snake has become afraid of something. Try comforting her and hold her close to your body. A lot of holding and babying should change her attitude. I really believe snakes only bite for two reasons.....1. They are hungry, 2. They are afraid. Your post sounds like the second. Good luck and stay patient.

Thanks for the response!

I do believe you are correct. Since we've had her when you pick her up she'll thrash around pretty violently. It normally takes a few min for her to calm down. We try our best to make sure she feels secure by wrapping her tail/entire body around our arms. She was one that we'd pull out for people to see because once she was calm she was great and we 'thought' we would never have to worry about her bitting. We even started feeding her more to see if that was maybe the problem but its obviously something else. I just don't know what to do and now I'm pretty scared to mess with her. My b/f will have to deal with her until she settles. My arm looks like a cheese grater got ahold of it and its black and blue. Luckily my pride was hurt more than anything.
