Today i put some higher end outdoor carpet in a few of my cages just to see how it works. So far i'm liking it because the snakes use their hides instead of just going under the newspaper. Can anyone think of any reasons why the carpet would be bad? Just want to see if anyone else has had negative resulys. Thanks

Carpet harbors bacteria and can be a real pain to clean, let alone sterilize.

I use krinkled kraft paper instead of newsprint, thick absorbent and comes in 300' rolls.

Snakes go under newspaper because it provides security, traps heat, and snakes tend to like the feel of the substrate on their backs.

So, knowing this now, why deprive the snakes of what they like?

Carpet smells over time, and becomes a pain to clean unless you have many spare pieces. You can use it of course. I just think that you will soon move away from it.

The krinkled paper Jeremy speaks of can be found online at Uline or in the classifieds here on kingsnake (called cage liners).

the carpet can be taken out easily. it can be sprayed hosed or when needed steamed.as for why i wouldn't want my snakes under paper, i'll tell you when your cleaning a cobras cage and he pops up on the other side of the cage from where you thought he was, you can have a bad day. I keep mostly hots so this is kind of a safty issue

That kind of information would be good in your initial post. Yes, that changes things.

If you haven't already, asking this on the venemous forums might be a great idea.

Sani-Chip is a type of wood particulate substrate that, when spread in about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick layer, still gives you the benefits of a substrate and pretty much prevents the snake from being able to completely disappear under it (hatchlings excluded).
