care fresh

KingKrazy103 Oct 29, 2009 12:35 PM

anybody ever use care fresh bedding, found some cheap and bought it. I like the aspen i'm using but wanted a darker substrate to show off the albino cal. king's colors. i've seen some pics of breeders using it but don't know much about it. can it go longer than a month with changing it and will she still be able to burrow good in it?

I'd like to quit using aspen for my rodents cause I'm allergic to it. Would love to know if carefresh is ok.

Where I live, humidity can get low during much of the year. Care-Fresh compounds the problem in my case because it sucks the moisture out of everything touching it.

I've tried misting it and reducing ventilation. That helps. Still, consider that if the snake is a baby, baby kingsnakes have thin skin and are moisture loss sensitive. An adult snake will probably be just fine on it.

It is inert, so that is good. It does have dust just like pretty much any particulate substrate, so don't think it is dust-free.

No harm in starting with a small amount and seeing how it works out.

I'm crazy because I try Care-Fresh again every once in awhile expecting a different result. Hognose do fine on it, so do rosies. I just don't like it for kings and milks for the above reasons. But try for yourself. Might be fine under your conditions.

thanks for the info mark. i'm gonna try my cal. king on the care fresh. I have a large water bowl and live plant in the tank with him so i fight to keep humidity down so it should work out perfect!

I've had the same experience as Mark. I live inthe SFV in SoCal and esp this time of year w/ high winds the air is extremely dry. Like Mark I too have used it for my hogs and Rosies. I've nver used it w/ Kings because of its dryness. If it does happen to get wet also it seems like it turns really nasty. Not healthy for the animal to be on.
