"pyro" literally means fire(red), and when combined with the rest of the name, pyromelana, it means red and black, pertaining to the dark pigment(melanin).

Doug do you have any pictures or know of a site that has them shown?

There are lots of pictures and websites if you type in "mountain kingsnakes", or "Lampropeltis pypomelana pyromelana", etc...on a google search.

Here is a link to Bob Applegate's site

Here's a pic of a female i had a while ago. Some have less black than this one. It's the reduced black that characterizes the "applegate specials".

I'm not sure how literally you were asking what pyro means: Lampropeltis pyromelana is the Arizona Mountain King. "Applegate Special" is the name in the hobby given to the morph (unusual color/pattern variety) that Bob Applegate developed: they have very greatly reduced melanin or black in their patterns.
