SYMON....The MSP

Jlassiter Oct 31, 2009 09:31 PM

This male is from an Evan Stahl Male (Old Yeller) X a Dan Vermilya Orange Leonis Female...and is the sibling brother to Jonel Lopez's "Sharktooth" MSP Thayeri....
Going to pair him up with my reduced red Leonis Female Thayeri...

Here's SYMON....

John,

He is an exceptional MSP. But I have a question. In your post on the main forum about Annie, you said you were going to holdback some of the hatchlings from that pairing and try and prove out the reduced red. If that is your goal, why are you pairing her with Symon? Being that MSP is usually a dominant pattern, wouldnt that tend to cover up what you are trying to accomplish in the offspring? Wouldnt you be better served pairing her with a lighter leonis male? That way, the hatchlings may exhibit some indicators as to whether or not they are het for the gene you are trying to prove out and you could then choose those particular hatchlings to holdback. Not criticizing at all, simply thinking genetics and pondering out loud.

Craig,
You are missing the idea....Why produce more leonis that look like this? There question will still arise if it is hypoerythristic or not...

Leonis phase animals are WAY more variable in pattern and COLOR than MSPs.

I am first going to treat Annie as if she is hypoerythristic.
I am not sure though since she is a leonis and there is no CONSTANT color as there is in a MSP.
So...If I breed her to an MSP I hope I have some MSP offpsring... These neonates will be normal phenotypes and could possibly be 100% heterozygous for the hypoerythristic trait.

When the MSP offspring pair reach adult hood I am going to breed the male to Annie and to his sibling sister....If a pink banded MSP hatches...I think it's proven....If more washed out leonis hatch...It will take another generation or try the following yar at least.....

I am shooting for an MSP because RED is their CONSTANT color....
I think their will be no doubt if a MSP is hypoeythristic or not....
