Whats your opinion?

PspGuy Sep 17, 2003 09:31 PM

Okay, first off... how would a 120 gallon tank setup work? I was thinking a small heat pad on each end of the 5 foot tank with a cooler area in the center... of course multiple hides, etc...

Secondly, how many females could I house comfortably in a 120 gallon tank??

Sounds like a gecko paradise. I Would think that you could house 6 comfortably in an enclosure that size but no more than 8.

Just my thoughts,

you can really set it up any way you want. the way you suggested sounds fine. it depends on the demensions of the tank, length and width. since leos dont climb glass or swim, only the floor space matters.

In my opinion, you could fit probably 1.8 Leopard Geckos in that size aquarium ! If you went by the 1 leo per 10 gallons rule, then it would be 12 geckos. I think that two decent size heatpads, one on each side would work ! I think you leos will love that size tank ! I would get some vines and stuff and make like a big backround out of vines ! I would also do either a slate/sand bottom ! Well I hope I hoped !

the "1 gecko per 10 gals rule" doesnt really make sense. i havent measured, but i doubt that a 120 gallon has the floor space of 12 10 gallons.

Well, if your talking about the 120 Gallon im thinking of ( 48 X 24 X 24 ) then besides if you have some amazing wall climbing leos, then everyone else is right ! Wait, you said your tank is 60 " right ? If thats true, then ure tank must be 60 X 18 X 24 or 60 X 24 X 18 right ? IF your tank is 60 X 24 X 18 ( L X W X H ) then you could hold around 8 Leopard Geckos ! Now that im thinking about it, with that kind of height ( 18 or 24 ) why no build a cement structure made into like 5 pieces ( so they are oly like 20 pounds or so a piece ) then you could build something with basically a mountain with a flat back, but not to steep ( so the leos can climb ) ! Tell me what you think !

In my opinion a 10gal doesn't have enough floor space for an adult leo (10"x20". Boo seemed so cramped that i moved him to a 20gal long and still i think he could use more room. My 36"x12"x12" tank (unsure of the number of gallons that is) is where Zoe is, and she's less then half the size of Boo. She absolutely loves that tank. I hope to have all of these guys in their own twenty gallon tanks.....currently i'm drawing up the plans for a unit to hold them, but if i can't get it to work, 15gallons (24"x12"12" is the smallest i'll go. Of course these guys are my pets, so i'm going to spoil them I have no problem with breeders using racks at all, i would too if i had that many animals and i was breeding.

A 120 gal tank..........WOW that would be soooooooo fun to set up. It should be quite a centerpiece when done.

Get some treated wood. Make 2 more levels in your tank, about 6-10 inches per spacing for the levels. Be sure to seal the wood properly with a non-toxic sealer so it won't mold etc. Make your steps up to each level no more than 2.5 in in height.

Now... if you have the tools and feel comfortable doing this type of thing you can do the same thing using glass. Just use some treated wood for the braces and steps.

This will easily almost triple the floor space of a high 120g tank and your Leos will have alot of adventuring to do. Just make sure you use a knock-out design that is easy to dismantle etc for cleaning.

I'm another person who thinks the 10 gallon per leo rule is stupid. How you utilize the space is what determines how many leos you can fit. I would see how many hides you can fit according to what your design tastes and then start with one leo per hide.
