heating vision cages

MIchaelfm Nov 04, 2009 06:43 PM

What recomendations does anyone have to heat vision cages. I have the cages in a room that averages about 70 and I can not get the cages above 77 on the cool side of the cage. I have the recomended 65w bulbs and uth set at 95 with reastat. I even closed the vent on the back to prevent heat from excaping. thanks for any help.

The material of Vision cages does not insulate extremely well, and the glass doors allow for heat escape.

Adding a heat pad in the center or on the cool end will help alot. Taping styrene foam on the outside back of the cage (and sides too if desired) helps alot as well. And if you need it, cover the outside bypass door with a slab of styrene foam.

Just because you set 95 on the temperature controller doesn't mean alot if the cage is large and the room is cool and the heater is small and on one side only. Kind of setting a thermostat to 68 deg when the outside temp is 40 degrees and your house is missing a wall. So try insulation first, then add more heaters as needed.

I don't recommend closing the vent.

Reptile temperatures are more closely tied to substrate temperature, not air temperature. As long as your air temp
is 70 degrees, I think you would be fine with an under tank heating pad on one end with a rheostat attached to it.
