retic soaking, and soaking, and soaking

reptileclan Nov 04, 2009 07:41 PM

I got a 10 foot retic last Thursday. Beautiful male, in great shape, but ready to shed. Put him in his new enclosure, which he checked out from top to bottom immediately. Right after that, he went into his huge water basin, and he's been in there soaking ever since. 6 days and counting. He doesn't have mites, I checked him out when I first got him, and his eyes were glossed over, he was definitely ready to shed--but is 6 days of soaking normal? I'm starting to wonder if he's an eel or a snake at this point, lol. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

sometimes snakes feel more secure in a large water basin and use it as a hidebox (even if you provide a hidebox). I suggest removing the basin and giving him only a water bowl.

Thanks Frank. I removed him from the soaking tub, and put a hide in there for him. He found it after a day, and within 2 days had completed his shedding. Now he stays in the hide a lot, but he's eating well and the water tub is still in there, and he hasn't gone back in it. I may take his hide out for a few days just so he gets more used to the rest of the enclosure, because I want to be able to handle him soon. He is a bit skittish, but I figure it'll all apart of his nature, as well as getting used to a new environment.
