The calhoun county speckless line...

antelope Nov 04, 2009 11:32 PM

Blackwalls. Do you want your walls turned in or out? Here's a few pics of what I was talking about. First is the superdude. If I didn't know better, I'd have called it an MBK at birth, but the red flecks on its' belly gave it away. The red specks are turning an orange/gold color. I'll get some shots up of that as well. Hope you likes, I do! Next is a normal female from the same clutch, she's on fire all by herself! Last is a waaaay dark male that actually looks this dark. None are in shed. I originally caught these snakes because as you can see from John's pics of the original male, I thought they rocked and I wanted to work with this locale, and being the southernmost form I have ever found of "pure" speck. They are in the intergrade zone, but these are showing holbrooki all the way. I haven't found any "pure splendidas in this delta, but the intergrades are there. In short, I'm hoping that this is a natural form that can be replicated. We shall see. It's fun to have something to work towards, eh? They are all on double large pinkies and hope to have them on hoppers in a few weeks. Once past that stage they jump to small hoppers quickly. The ones I've raised so far stay at the hopper stage for quite a while, then hit that growth spurt sometime late next year. Lots of attitude when born, these guys stop musking very soon after birth.

Wow!,...those melanistics are pretty darn crazy Todd!

That certainly WILL be interesting to see if more can be produced later on.

good luck with that project, as that is a "one-of-a-kind" unique thing with holbrooki, especially when you figure any neighboring black kings wouldn't look near that solid black either. Then when you see the perfectly normal looking clutchmate there, it tends to prove the credence of them being absolutely genuine too.

I assume the parents are both basically textbook holbrooki too, correct?, and if this is the case, I would certainly be very excited about that whole deal as well!

Good luck with that cool line Todd!

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

antelope Nov 05, 2009 09:12 PM

me too, as I always look to these bellies to show the orange red tint to find the higher yellow ones, on this one there was just the occasional red spots. I hope the dorsum develops the bars most people don't like to see in specks, to me it would be the ultimate offset. But if there are just a few specks along the spine line, that would be cool as well. Time will tell, keep ya' posted.

Very, very interesting project, Todd. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that that turns out to be a single simple recessive gene-let's hope so!

See you tomorrow in San Antonio!

thomas davis Nov 06, 2009 01:57 PM

no i do not consider them all splendida. i consider splendida, holbrooki, nigrita all the same snake i never put a ssp.tag on them.
irregardless its cool you do split them it takes all kinds.
i spent many a summer down there in your neck of the woods i know of all the diff. forms they are very variable kings to say the least, your blackwall is proof of that ive caught some dark ones but not like that lilguy.
dont think im gonna make the SA show this time but who knows maybe...
