does anyone have a wild-type, non-amel cal king with bands as yellow as this amel? i'd like to see a pic.

Would anyone like to explain why the amel morph produces snakes with such brighter yellow? Or am i imagining that that's the case?

I'm going with no, the amel inensifies the yellow to a degree not found in nature,...Frank? Brian? Bueller?

Agreed. But WHY? why would eliminating melanin in bands/rings that WOULD be white, result in their being yellow? Given what we know about what takes place in the amel morph, what can be the explanation?

they are not white bands to begin with more of a cream to yellow removing the melanin makes them appear more yellow its called color subtraction, same as in amel hondos remove the melanin and the red appears orange. now there are black&white kings for sure but understanding the properties of color subtraction and addition will help i learned them in my lighting career, white can be mixed, get a red, green, blue light when properly mixed they will emit what we percieve as white light the degree of whiteness is controlled by the degree of the primary colors used. color addition and subtraction, at least thats my take on it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thomas davis

Hi Terry,
The amel Cal king strains were found in coastal Cal kings - those snakes are brown and yellow in much of what is considered "coastal" habitat. So that explains the yellow bands - they are yellow in the normals too.

Black and white Cal kings are from desert habitats typically, although certain non-desert locales produce some white bands too in the less southerly reaches of their range. I caught a light brown and off-white Cal king in Santa Barbara county once. Cal kings vary with the locale.

Anyway, back to the albinos - getting an albino black and white Cal king is tough to do starting from the yellow-banded albino stock. That yellow is not easy to completely remove. It can be done of course, just would take alot of selective breedings.

Years ago a breeder advertised albino black and white kings supposedly from a wild-caught albino black and white. That was the story anyway. I saw a picture of one, it had white bands.

Thanx, Todd. this snake is pretty funny because it's the jumpiest of my Cals, and my others are all WC. My friend explained to me that his snakes are purely breeders and he never acclimates them to human handling.
