Help for a newbie to Venomous

chongorojo Nov 07, 2009 01:20 AM

I have always wanted an albino diamond back and got offered a young male for free a few weeks ago. I did a lot of thinking and finally decided to commit to owning a venomous reptile and all the challenges and hazards that go with it. I have done a lot of research about owning, caring and handling a Venomous snake (I Will NOT HANDLE this animal unless it needs medical attention or looks ill and at that point I have some one to help me). So any great advice for a rookie? I plan on setting him up in a 20 Gallon long with peg board under the locking screen top just in case, I am looking for a locking hide so I can minimalize the risks. So If you can look back to that first "HOT" that you kept what would you have done different or what advice, web sites or books do you have to help me with my first hot herp....

A snake hook and some common sense go a long way.
You will have to handle the snake to clean its cage etc.

Find someone with experience to work with you. Where I live I have had the opportunity to help several newbies. It does not take long to help them with their hands on experience and it is worth making the contact with someone who has worked with hots. Really good handlers should not mind you asking for them to show you handling or moving techniques because we do not want you to make a mistake that may make us all look bad.

I have been trying to find a mentor here in arizona but as of yet have not turned anyone up yet if anyone is locale I would LOVE help....he arrives TOMORROW I AM SO EXCITED!

Jason as for cleanin duties I figured a trap hide would work well for moving him from one cage to another guess I forgot to mention he is a neonate..

Tongs and tubes are here already and I had hooks.

Thanks everyone but I guess I learned a lot more from all the sites that I read than I thought. I was hoping for more of a "my first time going back I would have done (_________,______0 differently as that didn't work well...

I've used the trap hides before and just never really liked them, probably just personal preference.
Good luck with the snake
