how do you learn to sex snakes?

rudedogsurfrat Sep 18, 2003 12:07 AM

for most snakes you get a good idea with the tail.

I ask this because I recently ordered a pair of woma's, and they were not cheap. The tails are exactly the same lenght and the seller told me that you can't tell with this species it must be probed or popped.
That is fine and dandy and all but how about in 2 years if I find out they are both males?
It wouldn't be bad if they were both females though. Belive me.

Not that I want to do it myself but I would like to know how you learn.

It's really not as big of a deal as many make it out to be. It is a good idea to have someone show you. I think the reason it is often discouraged to try it yourself on these forums is beacause of fear that some inexperienced young kid will try it. With a small amount of common sense anyone can do it. It's all about being gentle and not just ramming it in there. But, like I said, that's common sense. I learned at a herp society meeting.

part of the problem is that it varies from species to species. Some snakes are really easy to sex visually (hognose snakes, rubber boas) while others can be frustrating, particularly when young.

I find the shape of the tail more conclusive than the length for most species. But this is something that is again more species specific.

I think I would post the question on the python forum and see if you can get a response from another experience woma breeder.

Learning to probe/pop is useful, but not always accurate, and can lead to harm if done incorrectly.
