Interesting Video about HSUS

LarM Nov 08, 2009 10:59 PM

Here is an Interesting Video about HSUS .

Also another statement I found that was made about HSUS
Not certain of its validity but as far as I see its on target

Here's that great comment that was made under the video on the YouTube website:

Good video - definitely a step in the right direction, but it fails to mention that the HSUS has tax-exempt status under Section 501(c) of the US Treasury Code, when the code states that a 501 (c)(3) "may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates." More investigation is needed to expose these extremists for who they really are.

In the end it is all about money! They will probably say"ok,you can keep your boas, but you have to pay these fees"!

The thing that bothers me with that, why are they allowed to influence (or atleast attempt to) so much legislation while maintaining their 501c? Does nobody call them on it? Perhaps that is something USark, PIJAC or both should look into doing. Get one of the biggest enemies against the common pet owner ousted from the table, or remove their 501c status.

Exactly Randy that's what needs to be done in into this angle
and put HSUS on the hot seat !

Another guy on another forum did some digging and
came up with this info :

did a little bit of research and this is what was found...

they are in fact a tax-exempt organization under sect. 501(c)(3)
26 U.S.C. § 501 : US Code - Section 501: Exemption from tax on corporations, certain trusts, etc.

and they CAN make political contributions (for candidates, lobbying, etc), but those amounts cannot exceed
"150 percent of the lobbying nontaxable amount
for such organization for such taxable year, determined under
section 4911"

which can be found here:
TaxAlmanac - Internal Revenue Code:Sec. 4911. Tax on excess expenditures to influence legislation

that's where i get lost... anyone familiar with taxes/finances?

*edit* based on a table from sect. 4911 it would appear that they cannot make lobbying contributions that would exceed "250,000 plus 5 percent of the excess of the exempt purpose expenditures over 1,500,000"

according to that news report, their lobbying contributions are approaching (or exceeding) 100 million/year! seems like that is a BIT over the limit...

(exempt purpose expenditures seems to mean the money they spend each year on things that are related to the purpose of the organization? this is where i'm a little confused... help?)
