savanah monitor tail

joescool121 Nov 09, 2009 10:28 PM

I have a question regarding my savanah he is about 15 inches in length but he has a small kink at the tip of his tail. I supplement all of his food with calcium and i also feed him hard boiled eggs. Why did this happen? And can i prevent this from occuring? thanks to all.

Bad shed was the likely cause. The dried skin shrinks and constricts...the tail tip will likely fall off at the kink. Increase humidity. Moisten the substrate. (what is the substrate?)

If you don't correct this problem, the next things that will "kink" and fall of will be toes.

Scrap the hard boiled eggs. Feed rodents and insects.

Right now i have him on reptile carpet. I know this is not the recomneded substrate but the woman i bought him from told me to just use newspaper as substrate. so i figured it was a compromise.I was thinking about switching his food probably this weekend after i go to the reptile show. I measured him today and he is actually 23 inches ( i guess my estimate last night was a little off ha). what size mouse would you recommend?thanks for all your help i appreciate it.

See the link below for the best online care sheet for Savs.

IMO, the critical basics are:

Basking temps - 130+ degree surface temps

Damp diggable substrate - sand & soil mixture kept moist

Diet - rodents and feeder insects

Caging - large, large, large

See the below care sheet and order the book on that page...
