Finally got my BRB

jwilmot Nov 10, 2009 10:16 PM

I went to the reptile expo this weekend and picked up my new BRB.

There were some amazing animals there but she was the only rainbow. So she was the most atractive.

I am still letting her get used to her new home and will get some pictures when she is in a better mood.

My wife was not a fan of the idea of replacing my kingsnake with a larger breed. Fortunatly she took to her right from the start.

At first sight Jen decided that our new BRB was an Amidala. ( exotic and beutiful like the starwars character).

I am at a lost for words on how amazing she is.
Looking forward to posting some pics soon

Thanks for the warm welcome Dave.

I fed Amidala for the first time last night, boy was she excited about that lol.(live pinky mouse) It seamed to be a bit on the small side and I have read many different opinions on what size to feed a new BRB.I am wondering if I should upgrade to a fuzzy mouse or perhaps a pinky rat? I have not mesured her but I would gues she is 18-20inches long.

With rainbows is there a recomended time after feeding before handling? I would like to take pics of her today, but is it best to wait 2-3 days?

OT: Yesterday a friend found out that we got a snake and asked if we wanted his Geko. My wife likes lizzards more than snakes so I went and got her. She is about 14 years old and is about to go into shed. My 2 year old is really excited about both of them.

Back To Amidala, I have purchased a substrate call Coco Soft, it is coconut husk that i'm told will help reduce the chance of mold or mildew. It is also good for keeping the humidity up.
Has anyone else got an opinion on this product? I was a little concerned about her ingesting some but they said it will not hurt her if she does. Any opinions would be great.

Thanks for reading and look forward to joining your community.

np jwilmot, always happy to have new members.

IMO a pinky moouse is a micro meal for a BRB. Mine are offered a hopper mouse as their very first meal. They can even take down a weanling mouse. Yeah, not recommended. I'd definitely go with a larger meal. If you are concerned on size then a small hopper mouse or a rat pinky. I have my best success with hopper mice though. after several meals of stunned still twitching hoppers, they get the whole "being fed" thing down and are readily switched over the warmed up frozen thawed meals.

I have lots of animals and I =kep all mine on paper, so much easier to keep a large collection and easy to spot/find/clean up the messes. I've heard the coconut products work just fine but have no personal experience with them.

If all you want to do is take a pic, gently moving her from her enclosure to your pic spot and back should be fine. IMO handling is just that, holding and letting her slither through your hands and that chould be avoided for at least a couple of days (less with such a small meal).
