More on the topic of my "spotted patternless" *PICS*

Here is to Kelli and who ever wants to chip in-

I took a picture of Maleah (the SP) and Autumn, my carrot tail. Maleah is much smaller than Autumn, but I could probably put Maleah next to a much bigger female to show you the size of how tiny she is.

She never gains any weight. She stays at a constant 40-42, but is very healthy, active, and eats like a pig!!!! She's an adult, a little over a year old, but she looks like a juvi.

My thing is this. I have very often thought of breeding her. It has crossed my mind sooo many times. Why haven't I? Because I'm afraid to. I have heard with really tiny geckos like this you are putting them at risk of becoming egg bound and then they die. I cant say for sure, but I want to say it was mentioned on this forum before. Apparently Nicole Elliser (K&N) has bred small geckos like this, those geckos have become egg bound and died. I always hear lots on this topic of egg binding.

I would love to see what she could produce, but again, this little girl is one of my favorites and I'd be devastated if I ever lost her to something I did to cause it. I'm really attached to her, and I just couldn't risk her life. I might be sounding corny right now, but I dont think no one really knows the passion and love I have for animals. If I caused her death, I'd feel terrible for a long time.

I dont know what the rest of you think about it, but can some of you see where I am coming from? I am sure that some of you have your most favorite geckos that you would never want to see any harm done to.

Here is a picture of my hold back hatchlings from this year. This is Corona...Autumn's, daughter. I would have to say that Maleah and her are close in size, or maybe Corona is a bit bigger. Corona is also almost 5 months old (and keeps on growing and getting bigger), where as Maleah is over a year and resides with this tiny little body.

I would be afraid to breed her as well. Such a neat gecko, if only she was a male!!!

Oh man, could you imagine?

If she was a male, I would go ahead and use it for breeding material. I'd have no problems of egg binding there as well. But I am afraid to breed her, I dont think I ever will.

Oh well, she'll just stay as my little sweet heart. :P Nothing wrong with having a spoiled rotten little gecko! LOL She knows she has me wrapped around her little gecko toes. :P he he he

I agree, there is nothig wrong with spoiling your gecko rotten. I wouldn't take the chance on breeding her either, it's not worth the risk to her health. I think she is very lucky to have an owner as loving as you are.

try pinkies to add a bit more wheight on her (if she accepts it)

StarGecko Sep 18, 2003 01:13 PM

While she looks healthy, she looks like she could be a LOT fatter. If she is 40-42 grams now, I would guess that you could probably add at least another 8 grams to her even if she doesn't grow any longer- which would put her at a safe breeding weight. Is she housed individually? Warm side at 90°? Mealies all the time, calcium, lots of hides, plus occassional silkies, crix, waxies, pinkies, supers?

Obviously you care a lot about your animals which is great, and I applaud that, and I agree that you should not breed her if it is not safe to do so. But I think maybe with hyper-optimal conditions you can get her to a safe breeding weight and breed her successfully- she is apparently quite unique and it seems a shame not to breed her if it is possible to get her to a point where it can be done safely.

Have you tried a pinkie once a month or maybe even waxworms once a month ? She looks really nice ! I agree, good job on waiting to breed her because of her health being at risk !
