11/12/09 harly jungle litter

patoquack Nov 12, 2009 09:54 AM

I found these just before leaving for work.
mom is my 04 Harlequin that I purchased from Gray Rushin - she had a litter earlier this year in January when she was bred to a hypo possible jungle from Pete Kahl. This time she was bred to a male jungle produced by Bill Kirby. There are 17 live healthy babies in this litter - about half are jungles.

here are some quick pics taken as I was cleaning up mom and the babies and trying to leave for work.

don't worry - Louie is just looking.... these are Louie and Jazz - my lab/pit littermates.

thanks for looking.

That's a great chainlink pattern. Is it male or female?

patoquack Nov 12, 2009 08:12 PM

thanks.
I think it's a she.

Wow! Patrick that is either the latest or earliest litter of BCI I think I have ever seen! Great Looking Babies! Congrats!

Thanks Brandon. I'm saying this was an early litter. I have 2 pairs still locked up and two females that may be gravid.

Patrick, those are great! Love the chainlink pattern that seems very prevelant. So, I have a bunch of questions for you and requests:

Can you post pics of the parents? (do you think the chainlink look is coming from the harli side or the jungle side?)

Did the jungles really stand out (you said about 1/2 are jungles)? Are you looking at the pattern or coloration or both to easily make that determiniation?

How many 'possibles' did you get? (possible jungles?) or was it very clear which ones were jungles or not?

How do these jungles compare to the poss jungles from the prior litter? Can you clearly make the call now about the prior litter and prior sire being a jungle or not?

Sorry for all the questions and I'm sure you might not be able to answer them all right away but I am just very interested in this project as I plan to do the same breeding in another 2 years (with both a harlequin and a hypo harlequin). If you would rather respond directly, please feel free to email me: hisba at yahoo dot com

They really look terrific and I am so looking forward to the post shed pics! Very happy for you right now!!! :D

Thanks April.

here's a pic of the dad..
he's a nice example of a jungle - but not with a crazy aberrant pattern

I don't have any quick pics of mom that I can pull up right now except for this baby pic

I can't say for sure where the aberrant pattern is coming from - but I honestly haven't seen many consistant litters of aberrant harlequins. (I would love to see pics if any have been produced.) My female Harleqin had a nice litter this past January when she was bred to a salmon possible jungle - and I got a few nice really aberrant boas from that litter. About half of the offspring from this litter are aberrant. I feel very certain that my jungle from Bill Kirby is a definite jungle - so I have to believe that the jungle genes are coming through for sure.

It's hard to say much about the color of this litter yet until the first shed, but I would say that the aberrant ones stand out in color as well as pattern.

I'll try and post some current pics of the possible jungle litter soon and let you see. I'm still thinking of the earlier litter as "possible jungles." I do have the salmon possible jungle sire paried up with another female right now, and he was paired up with an albino possible jungle earlier - she might already be gravid now. so I might learn something more about him sometime soon.

April, no problem with all the questions. I appreciate your excitement about this litter. I'll be happy to send you pics of anything I can. just let me know.

Thanks for the comments on my mutts as well. I also have an older pair of boxer/lab littermates (Humphrey and Bogart) and they are great as well. The four of them completely look and act related.

patoquack Nov 12, 2009 09:03 PM

Thanks Bill. I love your male Jungle (my jungle).. he's been a breeding machine for me this season. He's already moved on to another female and is locked up tight on her as I type.

Buhaly Nov 12, 2009 07:08 PM

Congrats! They look great!
How are the older ones doing?

patoquack Nov 12, 2009 09:09 PM

Thanks. the January litter is doing well - most of them have moved up to weaned rats. I'll have to get some pics of them posted soon.

my male from you is taking small rats and doing great. I've put him on a few females but he isn't showing any interest yet. I'm still really impressed with his color. I'll be breeding him as soon as I can.

how are your holdbacks doing?

Buhaly Nov 13, 2009 08:35 PM

Mine are doing great. I kept 3.3. I'm probably going to give a couple of them a try pretty soon.

Thanks Al.
I'm impressed with my female as well - I can't really remember the entire thought process that led me to trying her again so soon, but kinda just remember that she put her weight back on so quickly and just had that healthy glow about her - so I tried - and it all just went from there. the funny thing though was that I didn't really think she was gravid at first - so I didn't make any mental note of a POS shed- and then she suddenly started looking huge. When I tried to remember when the POS occurred, I estimated that she would drop the litter during December - so I was really suprised to find the litter so early.

She's a great boa - she was completely calm when I removed her from the litter - not even a hiss.

Thanks again Al,
