water bowl questions

TimS Nov 13, 2009 03:49 AM

Well I have come to that point where I need to order water bowls for 6qt, 15qt, 41qt, tubs and was wondering what everyone uses and if they know any links to buy them wholesale or at least cheaper then pet store prices.

any input on brands, style, glass, ceramic, plastic, where to order etc would be GREATLY appreciated.

The Dollar Store in my area has an assortment of plastic and ceramic doggie dishes of various sizes . They work well for my Boas that are kept in racks.

I like the plastic doggie water bowls from walmart, less than 2 bucks and with the open base it gives them another hide option..

thats a tad high so to say since the baby racks alone will need anywhere from 40-60 then the juvie racks 20-30 then the sub adult racks only about 10 lol. plus im personally not fond of the area underneath since i keep water on cold side of cage/tub then the snake would be on cold side to much i think.

I will look into walmart tho to see what they have and if something else may work thanks

For all my hatchling racks I use the disposable water bowls from superiorenterprise. (a small deli cup with a hole in the lid)

For the larger racks I use larger deli cups with no lid. Sized so there is enough room to climb over the rim but not enough to be able to tip it.

For the largest tubs and cages doggie bowls from the dollar tree.

thanks dave,
I have been using a mix of deli cups, cleaned out mealworm cups, bowls from pet store etc. but just so bothers me every time i gotta clean cages every day from spilled water lol.

rainbowsrus Nov 13, 2009 03:21 PM

The key thing is to have the water bowl tall enough so when the drawer is closed it cannot be tipped over since as it tips, the rim would hit the ceiling. But not so tall as to prevent the snake from climbing over the rim.

i just realized whom you said you got your deli cups from and i heard something awhile back about their website being down and not safe to do online credit card buys and poss of them going out of buisness. you know if any of this is true?

rainbowsrus Nov 13, 2009 06:34 PM

Have not bought from them in a while but I have bought a lot in the past - all my shipping supplies. They did have their site down a while back and I just called in my order.

I personally only use water dishes that I can put in my dishwasher and sanitize.. Don't like the idea of throwing away all that plastic with the deli cups... I'm sure Dave does the environmentally responsible thing and takes them to the recycle center???!!! Here is the combo I use on my sub adults & adults. I use a ceramic crock as the water dish holder and then the Van Ness plastic crocks fit inside.. I can change all the water dishes in my place in less than 40 minutes and I have around 50 adult/sub adult animals... plain plastic crocks for my little guys... This setup is completely spill proof even if they overflow the bowl the outside crock has just enough space that the water goes into it and not the cage... about 9 bucks per cage if you by them in quantity and well worth it in my opinion..

LOL, I hand wash my disposable water bowls. Only when they are trashed or cracked do I put them in our recycling bin. Many of them have been in use for years!!!

For $9 I can get 60 water bowls this way.

i was thinking same thing at first like that seems such a waste but if they hold up to being hand washed it may be worth it. deff cheaper

rainbowsrus Nov 13, 2009 08:22 PM

Well, it's not like I have each water bowl assigned to a tub. I have 24 prefilled on top of the rack and as I find dirty ones I swap them out. When I run out of fresh ones, I clean all 24 dirty ones. That said, right now I have 268 tubs with babies and yearlings in them so about 290 in use. So far this year I've recycled a half dozen or so.

lol i figured you did something like that lol.

TimS Nov 13, 2009 06:15 PM

i like that setup but man thats gonna be so pricey lol.

BROWNSBOAS Nov 14, 2009 04:49 PM

About a $500 dollar investment which compared to some expenses really not much I got all mine back when the biz and money was rolling... $500 was nothing then a hypo boa or one albino and that was taken care of...The money is different now, but I'm finding the biz more enjoyable now that the rush of the morph craze is almost completed... Things are still selling, but as always things change..

yeah I am just a poor hobbyist who keeps a little of everything with a love of all animals tho reptiles hold that special spot in my life $500 for me is quite a bit specialy since i am still slowly paying off a few animals.
