Crazy Pits!!!

DanielsDen Nov 14, 2009 12:54 PM

Wouldn't it be great if you could swap the head and tails of pits and then have a snake that crawled normal?? I wonder if you could turn their little brains around then they would crawl forward??

It took me a second to figure out what you are talking about...but I totally agree with you!

My female black pine in particular when I take her out seems to more often than not go in reverse. At first I thought there might be something neurologically wrong with her, but after seeing several other Pits do it I figured it must just be something unique to the genus as I've never seen other snakes do it.

Definitely funny to watch!

i think this locomotion stems from their long history of hanging around & in burrows where they can retreat backwards as well as to get to & pin a food item against the burrow wall w/ their lower third. i have a very large crumbley red that will grasp & constrict food w/ her tail only on occassion. pretty weird looking.......
