How long between breeding and egg laying

ohernz Nov 14, 2009 03:07 PM

I have four breeding pairs this season: normal x pastel, normal (jungle)x pastel, pastel x pastel, and het pied x het pied. I lowered their temps for a few weeks before I put males and females together and all are breeding EXCEPT the het pieds. Last season the het pieds were together and bred like rabbits, almost constantly, until the male apparently lost interest and I assumed the female was pregnant, but she never laid eggs. They both went back to their normal routine for the rest of the year. When it started getting cooler I lowered their temp just as I did with the others and put them together. This season the male has not shown any interest in the female. Could she still be holding his sperm from last season? Could she still produce eggs from last season breeding?
What's the longest time a female has gone between the last confirmed copulation and egg laying?
Should I do anything? I have another male het pied, maybe I should try putting him with the het pied female?

breed then lay....could take all year...one female here took 10 months then laid....

...could she lay from last year still ?.......yes....

will the pieds breed? up to them...
will they lay? up to her...
should you use a second het pied male for the female het pied...?....ummm...you got it use it if it IS a het pied also....same deal...

.....they do what they want....balls can breed, feed or lay anytime all year long....most breed all winter and lay in summer....

hmmm thanks, I was wondering if it could take that long...
The other female that bred last season laid eggs in July. I don't remember exactly when was the last time the het pieds bred, but I know it was late in the season (i have records, just have to check), so it is not one year yet. I am going to wait and see what happens with this pair and if in a week there hasn't been any action, I will switch males.

I just checked my records.
The het pieds were put together in January and from January to March they bred several times a week. Then the male lost interest in the female and I separated them in late March. Since she did not laid eggs in the summer, I assumed she didn't get pregnant and I included them in this breeding season.
