how many use 4x4s or AWDs?

jeffb Nov 15, 2009 02:27 AM

I am seriously considering building up a rally car to take out west
and race around during the day and take snake pics at night next spring. I imagine pandale dirt is a very close approximation of the off road rally courses that the euro spec rallies use, or it was the last time I forded the river and made it all the way. I am just curious as to what percentage of herpers are driving 4x4s now
and on a separate but related note how many carry tow chains with them

Don't be too surprised to see a yellow rally car raising dust out there next year.

Well, last year I was VERY happy with my F-150 extended cab 4X4, when it turned out that most of the "ranch roads" at the Gries Ranch (venue for the 2008 HCU Annual Meeting) were more suited to horses than wheeled vehicles.....

Seriously, even when gas was up above $4.00 a gal (where, by the way, I'm hearing it is headed again in 2010), I still could never quite talk myself into trading down to something more fuel efficient. That truck is just made for west Texas!

I do plan to add some PIAA lights next season, however....

To get to the places I need to go for feeder lizards I need 4WD. Then, if I want resume herping AZ for locality boas and pyros I need 4WD. It was very tempting to trade in my 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 210,000 miles for a newer more fuel efficient Jeep Patriot 4X4 during the cash for clunkers program, but when I read it would be SCRAPPED - I said no way. I can put hundreds of feeder lizards and rodents to sleep all day long, but not my beloved Jeep.

Racing up and down Pandale dirt, huh? Dude, I wouldn't attempt that unless I had a tire rack on my roof loaded with EIGHT brand new tires and carried a professional pit crew for passengers! LOL.

Not to mention the dor's it would leave and the ranchers complaints. They hate spotlighting never mind hauling butt up the road. I think Jeff is just kidding anyway.

This will be built like a tank - lifted, coilovers, full cage, stripped & dipped - Probably a Subaru Impreza WRX of some sort..

On my last trip to the Pandale area I had three flats in 24 hrs so I just got a 4x4 for next year.

rpelaez Nov 16, 2009 09:35 PM

Three flats in about three hours back in 1997, and I had a 4X4. It's not so much the vehicle or tire as it is a function of weight and speed as my good friends at Sanderson Tire once told me. My vehicle with Firestone tires was overweighted with two friends, extra fuel, a big cooler and supplies and my speed was about 35 mph. That said, since that time, I've had an excellent history with Goodyear Wrangler tires opting for the extra protection of higher end Wranglers like the Silent Armour tires. I would have liked to have seen how the Silent Armours would have fared under the same conditions as the Firestones - my guess is much better. But, that road FROM HELL will never see my arse again! LOL.
