AP Racks - Escapees

JMo Nov 15, 2009 06:55 PM

I'm considering getting AP racks for my BPs and Kings- just wondering if anyone has had experience using AP racks and escape problems? I didn't notice any safety clips or tub locks to keep the tubs in their slots - maybe these aren't necessary?

Any comments/info is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

I really doubt you'll have any trouble with either Kingsnakes or Ball Pythons in any commercial rack. Now, if you plan to keep hatchling Mountain, Grey Banded mexicana or other small Lampropeltis spp. in lidless racks then I would look into it more carefully.

The only issue I can think of is if you're buying a rack built around the new Sterilite boxes with the built in lid-clips. I believe these clips need to be removed and leave a small gap at the long ends of the tubs. I have heard speculation that this will create security issues. I have not seen it for myself other than a picture posted on another forum so take it for what it is worth.

And of course this would apply to any rack using the Sterilite boxes, not just AP's.

As far as clips to hold the boxes in, these are really not necessary. If you need it for your peace of mind you can probably use binder clips or have some sort of recessed pin system fabricated.

Forgot to mention that the gaps in the new Sterilite boxes could easily be filled in so this is really a non-issue.

Also, forgive my lack of a comma between Grey Banded and mexicana in the above reply.

I currently use 2 AP racks. For my bigger colubrids, I have the 32 qt Sterilite and go lidless with no problems. For my younger specimens, they are in 15 qt., and I use the lids on their boxes just to be sure. Unless you are housing very young and small specimens, escape shouldn't be a problem even without lids. I do use the older model tubs.
