Vivarium and biological filter

hurricane34 Sep 18, 2003 08:40 AM

Greetings All!
I must first state that I am desiring to take a quest into the vivarium field and am still in the research stage. I currently own mostly snakes and saltwater aquaria but have always had an eye for the beautiful vivariums that are created.
My first question is, has anyone ever incorporated a biological filter (like on a fish tank) into a vivarium to filter the waste created by its inhabitants? I have read about the false bottoms, I am curious to know can I have the vivarium drain out the bottom into a biological filter (like a mini wet/dry or maybe a filter with a biowheel) and then be pumped back out to a water fall feature?
My second question is there any possibility of having a small pond with fish or is this asking too much if I want to have frogs? Thanks for your time!
Sincerely,
Roly

not at all man. I have the water under my false bottom sucked up by a fluval 304 filter, then it comes back into the waterfall, goes down a stream into a pool of water where I have some goby fish. They eat the flies that fall into the water. It works great.

with vivariums you're only limited by your imagination.

I have b/w 1.5- 2" deep. He doesn't even sit in the deepest parts, usually he beaches himself and has his little eyes stuck above the water to keep things in check. It's pretty cool.

Hi Roly!

I just set up a vivarium and I'm using a home made wet/dry filtration. I drilled three holes in the bottom of my 45 gal. corner pentagon to accommodate 3/4" bulk heads. I went with three holes on account of my water fall/stream dumps into a pool like area that is water tight. I took a piece of glass and siliconed it in one of the corners to form a pond like area. And in that area is one of the holes with a bulkhead and strainer( like an overflow box). Now the water comes down and into the pond, then it goes down into the wet/dry filter. Then it is pumped up though a second hole by pvc up to the starting point of the water fall/stream. The third hole (with bulkhead) is the drainage hole under the false bottom. As of now that drain into a pail. But I think I'm going to put a tee in the line that takes the water to the filter. I just wanted to let all the dirt settle so I shouldn't get much dirt in the filter
Hope this helped some!
