bugs in the poop

varanid Nov 16, 2009 03:51 PM

Boo hiss. Chomper (the rescue guy) had bugs in his last BM; the next one's going into the vet for a fecal, but the sample was dry-ish by the time I foudn it and they said it was too late to run one on that. It looked sort of like little white worms; not tapeworms, more like maggots. Very, very small maggots.
Until I can get my vet a fecal I'm going to have to treat him as a quaruntine animal. I'm just worried about how this vectored into my collection. Nothing else is showing similar symptoms. Even Chomper seems totally healthy, except for this...

What are the odds something buzzing around just laid eggs in his poop, versus him having internal parasites? I didn't I've had him a while now and this is a first. I dealt with protozoans once way back in a vine snake and that sucked hard...but it didn't look anything like this either so *shrug*

>id get a new vet. dry-ish doesnt matter with a fecal test. if you are seeing lil maggots they are likely carrion fly larvea. also you cannot see protozoa with the naked eye. all new arrivals should be quaranteened away from other snakes for at least 3months especially "rescues" as you have no idea what its been exposed to, for this reason rescues should also have blood test as well as fecals ran.
good luck.

My vet said the fresher the better *shrug* and she's done OK with other stuff.
As far as quaruntine...he's been in my care about 3 months now. No prior issues. My quaruntine practices aren't ideal simply because I don't have a seperate room. I wash and soap between each cage, and don't mix things like water bowls or substrate...but I don't have a seperate room to use for it. Just wash utensils and hands between cages.

I don't usually run fecals or bloodwork unless I have a specific reason too. I mean, he was a rescue, but he came from a kid, that didn't have any other herps...

and no, you can't see protozoans with the nakes eye but a major parasite load can result in *really& bizzare poop

I agree with Thomas, still need to get a float done but sounds like carrier fly larvae. do you see little "gnats" flying around?

yeah, there's little flying things in my snake room. Freaking annoying. They've been here a while...I'd hoped winter would kill 'em but it's been mild so far.

Yes, the fresher the poop, the better it is to get the right prognosis from a vet, simple as that. There is a VERY good chance that it is carrion fly larvae in the poop like the others mentioned. They love to lay their eggs in snake poop for some reason.

Get some sticky trap tapes, and hang them up, or some bigger traps at places like Tractor Supply, and feed stores. These places have lots of these for flies.

Another thing is, You can get a small container of Cider vinigar, and add a drop of dish detergent to the surface of it, this will also attract them, and drown them too. I hate those little bastards!..LOL!

thanks. These little bastards never bothered me in Colorado and I haven't kept seriously since moving to Amarillo. Guess they don't occur as frequently up north. Grody things...I found the little flies on a pinkie I had thawing out too (I'd forgot about it...it'd been out like a day or so). Just nasty. I'll try the no pest strips--I hate how vinegar smells!

the strips help, but learn to live with a little cider vinegar and dish soap, that stuff will get 'em all in a few days, repeat when necessary.

You Gotta Hate them buggers. Since they will enter a tiny air hole maybe invent a vinegar trap with small hole or holes, will also prevent fast evapation and vapor. I have been using disolved blue fly bait crystals w/water or flat beer it works !Sticky fly paper also works but will mot eradicate them.
Now im looking around for a Vinegar Trap Vessel!??Hmmmmm.
BTW ,i can open a cold beer at the end of the day at the other end of thee house and one of those gnats will appear at the mouth of the Can... RRRrrr "Growl"

The flies are less filling, and taste GREAT!, just like the commercial says!..LOL!

I dunno, I've eaten a few squishy bugs and didn't like 'em (Waxworms are NASTY). Mealies weren't too bad tho.

ChristopherD Nov 18, 2009 06:38 AM

I have too many lizards to start eatting their food TOO!.....

Maybe a Jar and lid could be used as a gnat trap with only a couple ice pick holes to keep the odor down ...L8r Chris
