Michigan Croc Rescue News and some help needed

MiCrocs-JPoe Sep 18, 2003 09:36 AM

Hey folks
sorry I haven't been on in a while, but am real busy.
Mi Croc Rescue has just exploded since being on animal planet.
Will be holding a seminar in Mid-Michigan next for animal control through out the state on capture-care-handling of crocodilians. Just did another filimg with animal planets animal cops, should air after the 1st of the year. We are ready to explode with crocs. We have 14 in our possession at our pond and 3 in an aquarium at home(under 12". Took in a C. Croc last week that was 5'10". Yeah I know. I near fell out when I saw it, especially since it was in an enclosure that was 8' long and 3' wide with a 3x3 pool that was about 10" deep. Our 2 big A. Miss have broken the 6' mark and are absolutely beautiful. We are how-ever full and cannot take any new animals until we can get some down to Florida for either St. Augustine Farm or a snactuary.

Would appreciate any help with posting pics on here to show the size of this new C. Croc. He is huge and fat. Also has a nasty temper. He destroyed his old enclosure when we took him out to bring him to our facility.

Bill what you think on a C.Croc that is almost 6' and captive raised? I have never encountered one this big. I can't say I've seen them this big in zoos. I think someone would love to have him for a nice display animal.

Hi John,

I have not seen one that large in captivity either. I took one in about 10 years ago that was just over 5 feet long and was beeing kept in a 120 gal aquarium with haul-out area. It was full of infection and ulserated skin so for the first 2 weeks or a month, I made it stay out of water except for a couple hours a day. When it recovered, it thanked me by being the most unhandleable beast I've personally ever worked with. Fortunately, I found a home for it out of state and have since lost track of it. How is the one you've got temperament wise?

As I've said before, more power to you for all the work you are doing for these rescue/unwanted pets.

I would be happy to post photos for you if you want to email them to me (is that what you're asking?)

Bill

Thanks Bill
That si what I needed. I have lost the info for password and login to the homepage for MiCrocRescue. I will email a couple to you today or tomorrow.

This guy is huge and full of attitude. He is in great health all around. He did however break out a tooth when we hauled him out of his old enclosure, which he completely demolished.

I'm at Ren Fest every weekend from mid-day Friday till Late Sunday night so if you want the photos posted sooner than Monday, you'll have to have them to me by late morning on Friday.

Gomeck, my male speck, is over 5 feet. He too was a rescue, one of the ones I took in that didnt have any teeth, had ulcers all over his facen legs and belly, and was terrably underfed.

I havent held him down and photographed/measured him lately, but hes one of the biggest specks I have ever seen. (maybe something ill do when I can get someone to man the camera)

Thanks bill
No rush on posting them

Raven
that's pretty good size
I am just amazed at how aggressive this one is.
I have handled a few C. Niloticus that were bad, but this guy ,by far, is the worst I have dealt with. He is big, fast and strong and knows it. He charges the fence when you come in the yard. He is going to be a lot of fun moving him to the winter enclosure.

but
the funniest thing is that the guy we got him from can handle him without a problem. No aggression, no strikes, hissing nothing. He was over yesterday and handled him like he was a log.

There are several large spec. caimans at the St Louis zoo. They are well over 5 feet in length each and reside in a pond in the center of their indoor reptile facilities. They all have their lower front teeth growing thru their snouts too.

Is that common for older specs ?
