Growth rate

varanid Nov 17, 2009 09:28 PM

I did my monthly weigh in on my kings. The Florida Kings went from 23 to 40 grams, from 16 to 30 and from 17 to 40 (thats my hypo female, NEVER seen one eat that much). Oddly the best eater is the smallest--not just in weight but length. He's visibly smaller than the other two, but he'll sure chomp down mice. He's from the same clutch so he's the same age.

The speckled kings went from 7 to 15, 7 to 13, and 9 to 16.

how long will this sort of growth continue, provided I keep feeding them when they're hungry? It's really impressive, you can nearly see them growing it seems like.

My rescue chomper has now hit 80 grams...hoping he breaks 100 next month! He's been nonstop eating, pooping and shedding since I got him. Started him off on tiny pinkies to jumpstart his metabolism and now he's on hoppers. S/he is catching up (I hope!). Maybe it'll get to near normal size. My 3 babies I got from BlueRosy are now as big as he was when I got him, and he was at least 8 or 9 months old then. *sigh* and the babies were only like a few weeks old when I got 'em in October.

I can only tell you my experience and I am certainly no getula expert....
I have (5) 2008 Holbrooki that are possible het for WhiteWall and one is Double het for WhiteWall and Amel....Everyone is showing the same growth rate and are all around 30" & over 250 grams with just one year a few months of feeding....These were tiny little 10" hatchlings not too long ago.....it seems like.....
I think they will even produce a few good eggs next year....So I would say they will grow to adulthood by the end of next summer and will surely get to maximum length by 3.5 years of age....

I also have a pair of 2008 Mex Mex that have surpassed 25" in the same time period...These were much smaller hatchlings and have grown faster than any other Mexicana I have ever worked with....And I've had literally hundreds....LOL

Congrats on the good work...as long as the husbandry is solid your snakes will continue to thrive....
