Trans Pecos Ratsnake was my first snake

samanthabottoms Nov 18, 2009 12:23 PM

Hi, my name is Samantha Bottoms, and my husband is Archie. My first snake ever was my female yellow Trans Pecos Ratsnake.
I have a 4 1/2 year old Trans Pecos Ratsnake that Archie caught for me on his birthday, July 29th of 2006, so I have had her for almost four years.
I have actually cared for and fed her at our old apartment when he was working out of town.
Archie has been the one feeding and caring for her exclusively ever since he has been working in town and ever since we moved to the trailer that we now live in.
I tend to name any animals, including reptiles, that are living in the same house as me.
I have named her Princess. She has actually grown quite a bit since we have had her.
Princess had us scared this summer when she managed to escape from her cage. We could not find her anywhere.
Archie was out mowing our yard about two months after she escaped and when he went to move this woodpile from our yard to our neighbor's yard, he found Princess in the wood pile.
So I guess that we can say that Archie has actually caught her twice. It was kind of crazy because she was never more than a few feet from the cage that she escaped from.
Princess was nice and healthy when he did catch her a second time. I suppose that is why the mice population went down so much while she was out on her adventure.
I am fairly new to the snake passion but I have a great respect and love for the industry and look forward to learning more as I experience being a true snake owner.
We are waiting for the perfect male to breed with her for Archie to catch on one of his snake hunts in the near future.

My absolute favorite N.A. ratsnake! Looks like you got a nice one! and double blessed! You guys gotta make sure those lids are secure, especially after/during feeding! I am the world's worst and have had some bad experiences with escapees.

Thanks, I believe that I am very blessed and since her escape, we have been extremely careful.

Nice trans-pecos Samantha. It always amazes me when people find escaped snakes in their yard. Someone a while back was saying they found one on a tree in their yard that had escaped from their house 3 years before.

Thank you. It is amazing that we and others have found our escaped snakes in their yard. I remember when I lived in Washington State a few years back that my friend had had his ferret disappear into his yard and he gave up looking for it. Now that Archie has found our snake and now that I have heard your story about someone else finding their escaped snake after three years, I just wonder if my friend gave up to soon on his ferret.

Had a Cal King escape when I was kid (60s) and found it weeks later hanging from a branch about 12 feet up in a tree in the backyard!

Now THAT is pretty bizarre for a Cal. King to be found 12 feet up a tree..LOL!......wow!. Weird stuff certainly happens now and then.

Archie was telling me last evening that the person that found his snake after three years in a tree that you were speaking of in your post was actually him. Lol!
