Brooks breeding question,

MichelleRogers Nov 18, 2009 12:56 PM

This is my first year with brooks, at what size and age do you consider a female large enough to breed?
Thanks in advance for all help.

There is a lot of misinformtion on how big WE think a female should be before a snake 9male or female) should be in order for "US" to breed them. It is the snakes that breed and not whether we think they should.

I have bred 4 females at 20" One was 20". The other three were 21-22".

This year i double clucthed two of those small females. They had 6 eggs each and the eggs and babies were good. Females are also doing fine.

If a female cycles and goes through the process of ovulating she is ready to get her eggs fertilized. It won't stress the snake out in any way.

You successfully bred several females at 20 - 22 inches with no issues? Why so small? Was it a rush to get a morph out? I'm not provoking brother, but I just can't see why one would breed a brooksi that small when they can potentially grow so fast......sounds like you bred 'em at age one, LOL. Just curious...

We have found several kings in the past few years that have been gravid...and were just around the 20"-24" range, so it definitely happens in nature as well.
A friend also found one that size that passed one or two hard slugs kinda like she had been "egg bound" at one point.
