Hybrid Question:

snakeadventures Nov 19, 2009 05:14 PM

I have a lone male MBK and some really good-looking female corns and would like some advise on trying to make some cool hybrids. What is the formula for crossing corns X kings? Is this just a matter of carefully putting them together and hoping? Any advice or helpful info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Robby

OK!!! You are certainly brave posting in this section, and the hybrid forum is a better spot. However, I have some info that may help. First off, due to hemipenis structure differences between kings and corns, a corn male is usually used to breed a king female. The male kings hemipenes may damage the female corn cloaca due to size and spine configuration. This is what I have read and heard about, never done. I have also heard you may need to get each species ready to breed with the opposite sex of their respective species, then place the male corn with the female king. Other than what little info I have heard about, I have no other idea how best accomplished. Could be a matter of blind luck LOL!!

Yeah,....sure thing, definitely gotta have more of THOSE in the hobby..LOL!

It is a touchy subject, and there is an appropriate forum for such information. However, although I do not agree with it, I also do not necessarily condemn those that do it in an ETHICAL manner. I remember when Jungle Corns were the rage back in the day and lets not forget about the still popular Creamsickle corns!! I have drooled over many hybrids I have seen like honduran/corn crosses and few others LOL!! What does bother me the most though is the scrutiny you have to do today just dealing with simple things like whether or not the adult female amel corn you just acquired has any emoryi blood in it cause she looks a bit too "orangy" or off patterned, or if the mexmex kings you are looking at possibly buying have any thayeri blood in them cause they look a bit "off". The obvious stuff like borneo bateaters, jungle corns, etc. doesnt bother me. Its the sneaky stuff like pyro crosses, getula crosses, and similar stuff that kills me!!!

"Its the sneaky stuff like pyro crosses, getula crosses, and similar stuff that kills me!!!"

That's right, the one's that are more undiscernable, and much less identifiable are the ones that cause the most problems in diluting the genuine bloodlines in the hobby. Happens ALL the time on a daily basis.

And yes, certainly not just limited to corns, but with ALL the stuff in the hobby. Seems like when someone gets bored with whatever atrosity(s) they have just created, they quickly move on to see what else they can ruin as well, because "the cool" project didn't turn out quite like what they thought it might look like, or whatever the f@#$.

I constantly see the......" hey, what do you guys think this is?, I was "told" it was a...uhh,.hmm?,...." comments all the freakin' time!

This is living proof of the "snowballed" out-of-control" problem there is today.

Anyway, that's always been my view, and nobody's so-called "rationalization" will ever change that.

Bottom line is stuff(and their future offspring) gets sold eventually no matter HOW "honestly" any of them are initially represented as whatever the hell they "best" represent at any given time later on. That's how the dynamics of the hobby REALLY works. After 42 years of being deep into snakes, no "newbie" can try to tell me this isn't what really happens either, and this will continue until we go to reptile shows and see deli cups that simply read "snake" on the label.

oh well, life goes on.

To the original poster I say - There are many in the hobby who enjoy and seek out new and interesting hybrids just as there are many in the hobby who loathe the concept of hybridization. Regardless, you make your own choice and you should be able to enjoy your aspect of the hobby to the fullest. Just be ethical and don't screw it up for others by false representation of "genetic garbabe" which others have done and screwed over unsuspecting buyers. It's just like drinking IMO. I dont mind you doing it and as long as your 21 its legal. Just do it responsibly and make sure me and mine dont get hit while your driving home from the bar!!!

I have seen some L.g.nigrita X P.guttatus from a Canadian breeder and they were less than spectacular for sure. Different, yes, but not something exceptional in my eyes..

Agreed. I'd call the offspring from that pairing ugly. While some hybrids look "cool" to some people, I think it's safe to say the vast majority look unremarkable and therefore are unmarketable.

If the original person who posted doesn't have someone willing to buy the offspring (and I can't imagine who'd want those) then it's really not a worthwhile project (IMHO).
