New ZooMed 501 filter questions...

Mothi Sep 18, 2003 10:53 AM

Has anyone tried it out yet? I got one from PetsMart (brand new product) and hope to test it out and see how I like it. Otherwise I was tempted to make my own wet/dry trickle filter for a 20-gallon reptile tank that will have only 3-4 inches of water. The ZooMed 501 filter costed $40 (a bit much, but if it works great, might be well worth it since I can replace the medium like my Fluva 40something.)

Right now I have it running and when it starts up, you hear the filter because of the air bubbles. But in a minute or so it goes virtually silent. So far so good.

Anyone else tried it out yet and has anything to add about their experiences so far with it?

Right off the box for those who want to know...

Volts/Cycles : 110/60
Watts : 4
Max G.P.H : 79
Size of Filter : 6.5" tall, 3.5" deep, and 5.9" long.

2 chambers : 1 for filter sponge and 1 for carbon/ceramic media (which comes with the kit)
Says on the box : "Easy priming external filter for turtle tanks, vivariums, box turtle pools, or aquariums up to 30 gallons."
Comes with a spray bar.
Says : "Includes special water pump motor that can run dry for up to 30 days without damaging the unit!"

Anyone want to add any experiences they had so far? Positive and negatives.
