Cyclura pairs?

JRhine Nov 20, 2009 04:34 PM

Hi there! I currently have one rhino iggy, about 6 months old now. He is doing great and is a wonderful addition to our family. My question is, what is everyone's thought on keeping pairs of them? Do they prefer to be in pairs? And is there a way to sex a juvie? I can comfortably house them, they've already got a pen set up outside waiting on them to grow more, but I figured maybe a better time to get another one was when the one I have right now is still young. What are your thoughts on this? Do they prefer to have a mate or do they really not care either way?

Thanks a bunch,
Jessica

I would say it would be better for it to grow big enough for you to sex him and then you can worry in finding him a suitable mate. It wouldnt be good if you ended up with 2 males. what is your final intencion, to bred or to have pets? Because the possible combos would be diferent. If you want pets then two or more females if you have a space big enough would do. But dont forget this generaly are pretty much solitary animals. If you get a pair of females or a copple that gets along then its good and a enrichement of their lifes. But some pairs and animals simply wont get along, even females so be prepared to separate them if need be. As babys mostly everything is fine, but once they start to grow and hormones and personalitys surface things can get nasty.

What is the perfect age to sex these guys and how do you do it? I breed Beardies, so with them you lift the tail and for a male you will see two hemipenal bulges, is it the same with them? I measured him this morning, and he is around 18 inches long now. The end result for me, breeding would be nice. That is always a rewarding experience, but if I wound up with two females, then that would be fine too. Space really isn't an issue for me, I live in Florida and have pens in the back yard for them in case they don't get along.

Hi there and best of luck with your Cyclura. These are, in my opinion, the finest lizards on the planet. I live in Homestead, Fl which is about 40 miles south of Miami. If you're ever down this way call me and I'll show you how we do things here in terms of housing, sexing, social bevaviours, diet, etc. I've been breeding Cyclura for a while now and will be happy to help you any way I can...Thanks...239-645-9661
