Reputable Breeder in NE

gawforce Nov 23, 2009 12:48 PM

Hi All,

I am looking for a reputable breeder for Corn snakes here in the New England area. I currently live in Keene, NH but am willing to travel.
There isn't a expo in my area until April and I do not want to get one from a pet store (never really know what you are getting. Also I am not sure what "type" I am most interested in (there are so so many choices). I would love to be able to see them in-person before I chose one. I feel like I am going through the same craziness when I got my Beardies!!!

If there isn't any around here, can someone recommend one?

Thanks, Greg

Best place to go to find out if there are corn snake breeders in your area is the classified section and the businesses section (see tabs top of screen above the banner).

While waiting to find a local breeder or if worse comes to worse, waiting till the April show (well worth waiting 4 months to go to a reptile show than paying as much as 3 times as much at a pet store and end up getting an unhealthy animal), continue doing research into corn snake care. Its my view that there is no such thing as too much research.

Another benefit of getting a snake at a reptile show, is there is a very high chance of being able to buy everything you need for him there as well. Not to mention the benefits of talking with breeders, fellow herpers etc. You can also stock up on frozen rodents for your new snake too, much cheaper to buy 20-50 appropriate sized rodents at a show, than the same amount at a petstore..and you don't have to worry about shipping.

Thanks for the advice.
Even though its a bit of a hike for me, I am going to head down to the NY expo in White plains this sunday and do some "window shopping" and see what these beauties look like in person.
Hopefully I'll be able to decide exactly what color scheme I really want and get some good ideas on set-ups so I can be ready to go when the expo comes to Manchester in april.

Corn snakes are wonderful snakes and definitely beautiful with so many morphs to choose from. So many in fact its hard to stick with just one LOL.

There is great beauty even in the normal corn snakes...Miami and Okeetee phases are quite striking. Add in all the possible morphs, hard to decide what to stick with. I like the anery morphs, bloods, a newer morph who's name I am not completely sure...Tanzerile..though can't remember if its a hybrid, morph or naturally occuring phase...too many new things coming out in the cornsnake world...can't keep up half the time LOL

I am not much a fan of the 'pale' morphs...though I do own a snow, though I am rather disappointed in her...she's about 3' with a minor kink...which I didn't notice when I bought her as a baby. Other than that she's healthy and lively. All the lavenders, pearls and whatnot...don't appeal to me. Not that there is anything wrong with those morphs...just not a big fan of how they look myself. I like bold patterns/color combinations more or solid unbroken colors, like Leucistics (initially I didn't think much of them till a friend gave me his leucistic Texas rat snake...once I took him out I was impressed.)

Bloods are interesting...start out looking patterned and 'bleed' out as they get older, leaving a nearly completely patternless blood redish snake..which is kind of neat.

Try http://www.pjcreptiles.com

They are in Maine. They have great corn snakes & are super people. I have bought 1 snake from them so far & would definitely do business with them again.

Hey thanks for all the good info. I ended up going down to the Expo in White Plain Ny just to "check some corns out"...but I ended up getting one, an Amber Motley.. I think :P.... Not gonna breed her or anything so it doesnt matter much to me what she is but I love her color an pattern..I'll post a picture as soon as she gets more comfortable in her surroundings.

So far so good though. She has shed once already and is eating with out problems (I am feeding her pre-killed pinkies every 4-5 days at this point)

She spends most of her time "hiding" but from the literature I have been reading that is normal for a girl of her size. I try to handle her for about 15-20 mins before I feed her so she gets use to me..she stopped striking at me last week so thats good :P I am looking forward to watching her grow up!!!

Thanks again,
Greg
