humidity?

dragonvet2 Nov 23, 2009 11:12 PM

i house 3 juvi boas all under 4 feet in rubbermaid type enclosures. i will be purchasing some nice boa enclosures around the 1st of the year.my problem is the humidity in the enclosures. i put in a tub of water for them to bath in/drink. once a week. the tubs i keep them in gets totaly saturated with water. the humidty stays around 60-70% when i put the tubs in. i usually leave the tubs in till they go to the bathroom,or finish shedding. how do u keep a lg water source in these rubbermaids? with out drenching it? i use newspaper for substrate. and their are 3 drilled holes on one side, about dime sized.i use heat rope. teps are 80 on coolside and 90-95 deg hot side.is their a such thing as too much humidity? i never allow the saturation in the enclosures to continue more than 3 days. ill let the enclosure dry out,and humidity drops to about 45%.ill spry oneside and humidity gets back up to 55-60%,but not for more than a few hours. its just really dry here in texas.and it is only getting worse in the winter.what do i do,to provide them with optimal humidity?

Actually 60% humidity is optimal . But when I achieve that percentage , my tubs aren't drenched as you described, but rather mildly foggy instead . A couple things you can do is --

> Make sure the water isn't on the hotter side of the tub . I put mine right in the center of the tubs and cages .
> Smaller water dishes will help . Unlike you, I do not like my Boas to soak in the water that they're going to drink from. Nor do I like them to have the opportunity to defecate in their water dish . It really bothers me when they do that. Boas do not need to soak -- just an occasionl spray down works fine.
> Maybe some more holes in the tub as well . Not dime size as you already have. I would be concerned that they may push their nostils onto that size of holes and cause nose rubs . Using a heated soldering iron creates smaller holes with a melted rim that is smooth to the touch.
