Excuse the pun, but...

blazeyoungblood Sep 18, 2003 12:29 PM

My RETF croaked. I have no clue why, I had him for three days, he had plenty of space, moisture, and warmth. He turned a little bit of a darker green, and then I found him belly up the next morning. I never handled him either, and I treated the misting water before I sprayed down the enclosure. Anyone, please help me out.

Did you get it from a breeder or a pet shop? It could have been as simple as stress (RETFs are so fragile) or it could have been that the poor lil guy was already sick and had parasites or something. Contact the place that you got him from. If it was a pet shop, find out where they get them from. If it was a breeder, ask about the rest of the brood.

If it was recent take it into a vet that handles herps and have a necropsy (sp?) done to see what the cause was.

Most places give you a few days to make a claim and get it either replaced or your money back.

How old (big) was it, what was your tank set-up (size, temp, humidity, substrate) Had he eaten at all while you had him and what? Any information you can provide will be very helpful to those here.

So very sorry about your loss

He was about three inches, and I got him from the local Petco. He had not eaten while I had him, I got a 20 gallon high tank for him. The substrate was the forest floor stuff, it comes in a brick that you soak in water. The humidity was a constant 70-80% and the temp was between 84-86 daily, and about 76 at night.

Unfortunately, there's your problem. PetCo often sells sick animals. They don't care for them properly which in turn causes added stress. As I said, REs are so fragile and chances are it was stress that caused his demise.

I would contact them and fight for your money back then get a new one from a breeder. Don't buy another from PetCo, and don't have them replace it because chances are the same thing will happen again.

If you have a vet that handles herps, talk to them and get something in writting stating that the frog was ill and it's death was not due to your care. Other wise the idiots at PetCo will fight you on it and you'll be out money and a frog.
