Need advice on eye issue!

jhm1987 Nov 24, 2009 11:49 AM

I recently bought two new bps. They were shipped out yesterday evening and arrived this morning around 11:00. One of them however I'm worried about. She has skin coming out around the back of her eye from under her scales. Anyone ever seen this?

Definitely not a good pic but she wouldn't be still!

Its very difficult to tell anything from the picture though it does look like the flesh surrounding the eye is protruding unnaturally. My suggestion is bring the snake to a vet, they can better assess your snake.

Not knowing what transpired before you got this ball it probably wouldn't hurt to get it checked by a vet. I had a male cinnamon get nicked in the eye by a rat in the exact same spot and is still noticeable today. This happened on 10-9 and looks very similar to yours. I treated it with neosporin initially and the eye went cloudy but is now coming back around. Did you contact the person who sold this snake to you and ask what is going on with the eye? If it was an injury it should be fine going forward. I will try to post a pic of mine for comparison.

I didn't get a good shot myself.

That does look a lot like hers. The seller said she was perfect when she was sent out. He thinks that maybe the pressure in the plane got to her. Ever heard of that happening?

NEVER had any problems shipping via air shipment. I think the animal looked like that when it left the seller. He should know what the problem is.....

Pardalis Nov 24, 2009 07:48 PM

I don't have enough experience to answer that air shipping question but I guess it comes down to how reputatable the seller is and whether you believe him/her. If it was an injury it will take awhile to disappear, probably a few sheds. I would keep it in quarantine until you figure out how to proceed with this. Good luck with her.

No,

There is no way that could have been from the pressure change in the airplane. Just absolutely out of the question.

I received a male a couple years ago with that same problem. The seller offered to pay any vet bills. It turned out to be an eyecap that folded under and went away with the next shed.

Yes ive seen before i had a ball that i purchased and had retained a eye lid cap after shedding and when i recieved i put him in tank and acculmated him, then when next shed came around it still was on so there was no telling how many times the snake shed from this person not to mention how many layers of shed were left on eye ended up taking him to vet and me and the vet remove eye cap which later was infected. Now 2 yrs later it is still there but not as bad slowly going away.

jhm1987 Nov 25, 2009 07:56 AM

This was actually the first thing that ran across my mind as her nose/mouth is usually pink (almost raw looking) and there are probably 5-10 bad scales on the top of her head. I've just never seen it happen nor did I know what it would look like.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Well I have some good news. Her eye has slowly been getting better everyday and last night it was BARELY visiable. She hasn't shed or anything. It just said ADIOS!

Thank you everyone for the replies and sharing your experiences!
